{"id":157110,"date":"2019-12-12T10:05:05","date_gmt":"2019-12-12T15:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=157110"},"modified":"2019-12-11T12:04:40","modified_gmt":"2019-12-11T17:04:40","slug":"uconn-receives-3m-gift-ecology-evolutionary-biology-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2019\/12\/uconn-receives-3m-gift-ecology-evolutionary-biology-research\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Receives $3M Gift For Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">Impressed by UConn\u2019s research in ecology and evolutionary biology, an anonymous donor has given $3 million to endow two research positions in the University\u2019s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">The unprecedented gift means the university will be able to recruit and retain from among the best scientists in the field. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">\u201cThis gift will elevate the College\u2019s already innovative research and education<\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> in ecology and evolutionary biology, sciences that are increasingly relevant in the modern world<\/span>,\u201d says Juli Wade, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. \u201cTransformative gifts like these help us attract and keep the best researchers and educators, who enrich the entire University and the state of Connecticut.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">The gift speaks directly to UConn President Thomas Katsouleas\u2019s goal of doubling UConn\u2019s research enterprise over the next 10 years. UConn, a top 25 public research university, carries out research within its 14 schools and colleges and 80 research centers and institutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">\u201cThis is completely unprecedented,\u201d says Eric Schultz, professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. \u201cNo department in the University has been granted two endowed chairs simultaneously like this. It represents a substantial and absolutely incredible opportunity for us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">Ecology and Evolutionary Biology faculty and staff investigate and teach about the earth\u2019s heritage of biological diversity, an important area of research given the high rate of human-caused extinctions, says Schultz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">The two positions can be used to recruit scholars to the department or to support current faculty members.
