{"id":157191,"date":"2019-12-13T14:48:44","date_gmt":"2019-12-13T19:48:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?post_type=school-college-post&#038;p=157191"},"modified":"2019-12-13T14:48:44","modified_gmt":"2019-12-13T19:48:44","slug":"mighty-mice-head-space-important-health-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2019\/12\/mighty-mice-head-space-important-health-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"Mighty Mice Head to Space on Important Health Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, Dec. 5, researchers from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jax.org\/\">The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine (JAX-GM)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/\">UConn Health<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.connecticutchildrens.org\/\">Connecticut Children\u2019s<\/a> sent genetically-engineered \u201cMighty Mice\u201d to the International Space Station to learn about the effect of microgravity on muscle and bone loss.<\/p>\n<p>The mice were launched at 12:29 p.m. on SpaceX\u2019s Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. These <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jax.org\/personalized-medicine\/mighty-mice-in-space\">Mighty Mice<\/a> are special mice raised by JAX\u2019s custom breeding team in Bar Harbor, Maine, that are genetically engineered to lack myostatin and therefore display approximately twice the average muscle mass. The mice will spend approximately the next 30 days in space to help researcher Se-Jin Lee, M.D., Ph.D., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jax.org\/research-and-faculty\/faculty\/se-jin-lee\">professor at JAX-GM<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/genetics\/person\/se-jin-lee\/\">Presidential Distinguished Professor at UConn School of Medicine<\/a>, understand the impact of microgravity on muscle and bone degeneration.<\/p>\n<p>Lee\u2019s research study is a collaboration with co-investigator \u2013 and spouse \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.connecticutchildrens.org\/about-us\/find-a-doctor\/emily-l-germain-lee-md\/\">Emily Germain-Lee, M.D.<\/a>, professor of pediatrics at UConn School of Medicine and Division Head of Pediatric Endocrinology at Connecticut Children\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers will utilize data from this mission to further explore the potential that myostatin-inhibitors hold for treating muscle and bone loss. This could benefit everyone from astronauts \u2013 helping prevent skeletal muscle and bone loss during spaceflight and enhance recovery following their return to Earth \u2013 to people who are suffering from muscle atrophy and bone degeneration-related conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a project that I\u2019ve been trying to get off the ground, so to speak, for many, many years. (Courtesy JAX)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Germain-Lee also manages the first-of-its-kind Albright Center at Connecticut Children\u2019s, which cares for more patients suffering from this rare inherited bone and endocrine disorder than any other center in the world. At Connecticut Children\u2019s, Dr. Germain-Lee provides clinical services to these patients while her robust laboratory research and clinical trials are underway at UConn School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the remarkable science, the \u201cSending JAX Mighty Mice to Space\u201d project will incorporate an invaluable STEM learning experience within the Hartford, Connecticut Public School System. Lee and Germain-Lee are working with JAX\u2019s Genomic Education team to develop a curriculum for two Hartford public high schools. The students will have the opportunity to analyze data collected at the ISS and conduct their own independent projects about muscular and bone degeneration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an independent, nonprofit biomedical research organization, we are focused on conducting the most impactful science and empowering the global biomedical community \u2013 including the scientists of tomorrow,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jax.org\/people\/charles-lee\">Charles Lee, Ph.D., FACMG<\/a>, scientific director and professor, The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine. \u201cAnd that\u2019s part of what makes this program so special: the opportunity to collaborate with UConn Health and Connecticut Children\u2019s, as well as inspire the next generation of scientific leaders right here in our local community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Astronaut Jessica Meir, a physiologist who is serving as a flight engineer on the current space station mission, hails from Caribou, Maine and was trained to work directly with the JAX Mighty Mice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is true team science and this exciting research advancement among our strong partnering institutions of UConn School of Medicine, JAX and Connecticut Children\u2019s is literally out of this world,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Liang-Bruce\">Dr. Bruce T.
