{"id":158250,"date":"2020-02-11T13:10:50","date_gmt":"2020-02-11T18:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?post_type=school-college-post&#038;p=158250"},"modified":"2020-02-11T13:10:50","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T18:10:50","slug":"new-study-quantifies-connecticut-green-industrys-economic-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2020\/02\/new-study-quantifies-connecticut-green-industrys-economic-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"New study quantifies Connecticut green industry\u2019s economic impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctn.state.ct.us\/ctnplayer.asp?odID=17123\">just-released<\/a> report by CAHNR\u2019s Zwick Center for Food and Resource Policy, <em>Impact of the Green Industry on Connecticut\u2019s Economy<\/em>, highlights the economic importance of ornamental horticulture in our state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile every sector of the agriculture industry is important to the economy of Connecticut, ornamental horticulture currently accounts for more than half of the state\u2019s agricultural sales,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/are.uconn.edu\/person\/rigoberto-a-lopez\/\">Rigoberto Lopez<\/a>, Richard DelFavero Professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/are.uconn.edu\/\">Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics<\/a> (ARE). \u201cThe green industry should be recognized properly as an integral part of Connecticut\u2019s agriculture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris Laughton, ARE master\u2019s candidate and director of knowledge exchange at Farm Credit East, completed the project as an independent study under the supervision of Lopez. Laughton brings his own horticultural and business experience to the project, having worked in his family nursery business and having earned a degree in horticulture from Cornell and an MBA from UMass Amherst.<\/p>\n<p>The study was requested and funded by the Connecticut Nursery and Landscape Association (CNLA), with input from Extension Educator <a href=\"http:\/\/extension.uconn.edu\/bio\/wallace-bio.php\">Victoria Wallace<\/a> and CNLA president and legislative board coordinator Dustyn Nelson.<\/p>\n<p>The total economic impact to the state from the green industry totaled $4.7 billion in 2017.
