{"id":158735,"date":"2020-03-05T07:45:39","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T12:45:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=158735"},"modified":"2020-03-03T21:34:15","modified_gmt":"2020-03-04T02:34:15","slug":"uconn-researchers-discover-new-stem-cells-can-generate-new-bone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2020\/03\/uconn-researchers-discover-new-stem-cells-can-generate-new-bone\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Researchers Discover New Stem Cells That Can Generate New Bone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">A population of stem cells with the ability to generate new bone has been newly discovered by a group of researchers at the UConn School of Dental Medicine.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/stemcellsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/stem.3159\">the journal STEM CELLS<\/a>, lead investigator Dr. Ivo Kalajzic, professor of reconstructive sciences, postdoctoral fellows Dr. Sierra Root and Dr. Natalie Wee, and collaborators at Harvard, Maine Medical Research Center, and the University of Auckland present a new population of cells that reside along the vascular channels that stretch across the bone and connect the inner and outer parts of the bone. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">\u201cThis is a new discovery of perivascular cells residing within the bone itself that can generate new bone forming cells,\u201d said Kalajzic. \u201cThese cells likely regulate bone formation or participate in bone mass maintenance and repair.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stem cells for bone have long been thought to be present within bone marrow and the outer surface of bone, serving as reserve cells that constantly generate new bone or participate in bone repair. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42255-018-0016-5\">Recent studies<\/a><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> have described the existence of a network of vascular channels that helped distribute blood cells out of the bone marrow, but no research has proved the existence of cells within these channels that have the ability to form new bones. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this study, Kalajzic and his team are the first to report the existence of these progenitor cells within cortical bone that can generate new bone-forming cells &#8211; osteoblasts &#8211; that can be used to help remodel a bone. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To reach this conclusion, the researchers observed the stem cells within an ex vivo bone transplantation model.
