When people question whether the research done at the UConn School of Business is \u201creal,\u201d Lucy Gilson fights back.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople say to us, \u2018You\u2019re not curing cancer. You\u2019re not helping a plane stay in the air,\u2019\u201d says Gilson, associate dean of faculty and outreach for the School. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But what UConn business researchers are doing includes <\/span>determining the ideal group of people for a mission to Mars<\/a>, helping teams work together more effectively, studying leadership tactics for maximum impact, and analyzing corporate investment strategies in certain economic climates, among many others, she says.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIs that curing cancer? Maybe not,\u201d Gilson says. \u201cBut is that helping the business world succeed? Absolutely.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Communicating the impact that UConn School of Business research makes on the global business community is among Gilson\u2019s charges in <\/span>her associate dean role<\/a>, to which she was appointed in fall 2019. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While her purview has expanded, Gilson says she is still very much a professor, dedicated to teaching and research. Named among the <\/span>most highly cited researchers<\/a> in the world by the Web of Science Group in November, Gilson\u2019s areas of expertise include leadership, team effectiveness, and creativity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Gilson\u2019s recently published work includes studies on the <\/span>importance of professional familiarity in virtual teams<\/a> and <\/span>the balance between standardization and creativity<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She recently talked with Julie Bartucca of the <\/span>UConn 360 podcast<\/a> about how her research can help businesses and how women can help each other in the male-dominated business world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
