Hernandez is UConn\u2019s fifth Newman Civic Fellow and an Honors student at UConn Stamford, majoring in political science and economics with a minor in English. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onsf.uconn.edu\/newman-2018\/\">Newman Civic Fellows Award<\/a><\/span><span style=\"background: white; margin: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">, sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/compact.org\/\">Campus Compact<\/a>, honors college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.<\/span> <span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All candidates for the award must be nominated by their school\u2019s president or chancellor. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIn his legislative advocacy, his political activism, and his service to his community, Michael advances the values of the Newman Civic Fellowship,\u201d UConn <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/compact.org\/newman-civic-fellow\/michael-hernandez\/\">President Thomas Katsouleas<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> said on the fellowship website. \u00a0\u201cAn immigrant himself, Michael incorporates his personal story into both his scholarly pursuits and his community service efforts.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Newman Civic Fellowship provides a one-year learning, networking, and skill-building experience for the students. (Photo courtesy of Michael Hernandez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Being a part of the immigrant community in Connecticut helped Hernandez pave a \u201cnatural path to pursue social change through public policy,\u201d he wrote in his personal statement. He believes the most effective way of resolving challenging social issues is through innovative public policy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a student, Michael has worked with Connecticut Students for a Dream to help pass the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycampus.com\/stories\/2018\/4\/26\/afford-to-dream-act-passes-house\">Afford to Dream Act<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"background: #fafafa; margin: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">which gives undocumented students in Connecticut access to financial aid at state colleges and universities. He is also working on a project to increase enrollment in Advanced Placement (AP) classes among students who self-identify as Black or Latino by creating a visual campaign to address racial disparities in education in Stamford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At UConn, Hernandez is also an<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"background: #fafafa; margin: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">active member of the Stamford campus community and an aspiring public servant.
