{"id":159353,"date":"2020-03-26T09:00:04","date_gmt":"2020-03-26T13:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?post_type=school-college-post&#038;p=159353"},"modified":"2020-03-25T17:35:33","modified_gmt":"2020-03-25T21:35:33","slug":"surgical-social-distancing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2020\/03\/surgical-social-distancing\/","title":{"rendered":"(Surgical) Social Distancing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While the world stops to wait out the COVID-19 pandemic, the orthopedic surgery residency program at UConn Health will keep going.<\/p>\n<p>UConn\u2019s Department of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine is partnering with Canadian firm Precision OS Technology to bring virtual reality capability, allowing residents to continue training remotely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis technology couldn\u2019t have come at a better time,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Geaney-Lauren\">Dr. Lauren Geaney<\/a>, residency program director. \u201cWe are struggling to balance the safety of all of our residents and patients with our obligation to continue to educate the surgeons we are graduating. (Image provided by Precision OS Technology)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a matter of days, residents will be able to use the technology to simulate surgical procedures rather than put their advanced training on hold for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<p>Precision OS Technology, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, says its VR platform is intended to provide an operating room experience previously only available by physically being in an operating room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will be starting my fellowship shortly, and now with no elective operative cases, I can feel my technical skills deteriorating without practice,\u201d says Dr. Christian Merrill, who\u2019s in the final year of UConn\u2019s five-year program. \u201cThe Precision OS platform is exactly what we need. It is challenging, case-based, and allows me to operate through increasing levels of complexity in virtual reality.
