{"id":160156,"date":"2020-04-23T07:30:31","date_gmt":"2020-04-23T11:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=160156"},"modified":"2020-05-12T09:41:49","modified_gmt":"2020-05-12T13:41:49","slug":"uconn-alum-nadav-ullman-co-creates-covid-19-clearinghouse-get-ppe-health-care-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2020\/04\/uconn-alum-nadav-ullman-co-creates-covid-19-clearinghouse-get-ppe-health-care-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Alum Nadav Ullman Co-Creates \u2018COVID-19 Clearinghouse\u2019 to get PPE to Health Care Workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When entrepreneur and UConn alumnus Nadav Ullman \u201912 (BUS) heard that school children had been asked to make cloth medical masks for health care workers treating COVID-19 patients, he knew he had to act.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThis seemed like something you\u2019d hear about in a Third-World country,\u2019\u2019 Ullman says. \u201cI initially thought \u2018How could this happen?\u2019 and my next thought was, \u2018Who is going to do something about it?\u2019\u2019\u2019 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In less than a month, Ullman and six others entrepreneurs&#8211;experts in everything from tech to health care to government, and most of them strangers to each other&#8211;banded together to create Project N95, a national medical-equipment clearinghouse.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To date, they\u2019ve helped 6,800 U.S. hospitals and health care centers source 252 million units of personal protective equipment (PPE), including N95 facial masks, ventilators, surgical gloves, hand sanitizer, and more.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe are, essentially, a rapid-response team, sourcing medical equipment at a time when it is extraordinarily difficult to find. We will keep it going for as long as it takes,\u2019\u2019 Ullman says. \u201cWhile I wish this service had never been needed, I\u2019m glad that this project is bringing tremendous benefit to the health care community.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Project N95\u2019s success has been touted everywhere from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/30\/health\/coronavirus-innovators.html\"><i>New York Times<\/i><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tjmccue\/2020\/03\/22\/project-n95-launches-to-battle-2020-shortage-of-n95-masks-during-coronavirus-outbreak\/\"><i>Forbes<\/i><\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/03\/13\/workforce-wire-coronavirus-heres-what-every-major-company-is-doing-about-the-pandemic.html\">CNBC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-15\/code-words-chaos-sky-high-prices-inside-china-s-mask-market\">Bloomberg<\/a><i>. <\/i>The project has been hailed<i> <\/i>by Mark Cuban, of<i> <\/i>Shark Tank and Dallas Mavericks fame; Andy Slavitt, acting administrator of Medicare and Medicaid under President Barack Obama; and Nikki Haley, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President Donald Trump.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Managing A Complex Web of Supply-Chain Problems<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What Ullman and the Project N95 team discovered was that there were suppliers worldwide who could alleviate the PPE shortage, but the supply chain had broken down.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just that there\u2019s a shortage of PPE, it\u2019s more complex. (Nathan Oldham \/ UConn School of Business)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThere were a host of problems, such as language barriers, payment issues (many foreign companies want payment upfront), logistics, and customs issues. Also, there was a massive black-market selling these supplies,\u2019\u2019 Ullman says. \u201cWe uncovered a complex web of problems.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sourcing is difficult right now because of the comprehensive vetting that is needed, he says.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u201cThe core of our organization is focused on vetting the thousands of suppliers. We look at pictures of equipment, videos of the manufacturing site, and check certifications,\u2019\u2019 he says. \u201cIt\u2019s an in-depth process and we do everything we can short of having boots on the ground in China.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A team of 100 volunteers is required to keep pace with the demand. \u201cIt\u2019s really a testament to the amazing volunteers who raised their hands and were willing to help,\u2019\u2019 Ullman says. They not only initiate business matches but have been able to group smaller buyers together to fulfill minimum orders.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One unexpected twist is that Project N95 developed such sophisticated &#8220;real time&#8221; data, that governments turned to the clearinghouse to discover what the needs were across jurisdictions. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe are helping enable governments to do their part,\u2019\u2019 Ullman says.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ullman Started His Entrepreneurship Journey at UConn<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ullman, a tech entrepreneur and investor, is leading the clearinghouse in addition to working his full-time job, spearheading fleet-management initiatives at Cruise, an autonomous-vehicle manufacturer based in San Francisco.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ullman established himself as an entrepreneur while still a UConn student. He and business partner Thomas Bachant \u201913 (ENG) created a company called Sobrio, which employed designated drivers to safely transport students home from a night on the town. Their company was the inaugural winner of the School of Business\u2019 Innovation Quest competition.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Their logistical experience soon led to the creation of Dashride, a highly successful, Manhattan-based mobile dispatching company that served nearly 500 transportation clients. It was recently acquired by Cruise.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Despite his many successes, this is Ullman\u2019s first project that involved safeguarding the lives of medical experts. Will this be one of the highlights of his career? The question briefly stumped Ullman.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI\u2019ll have to think about that in a couple weeks,\u2019\u2019 he says. \u201cRight now, my biggest concern is what do I have to do just to move a shipment of masks to those who need it. It\u2019s pretty wild, this virus.
