{"id":160917,"date":"2020-05-11T14:06:46","date_gmt":"2020-05-11T18:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?post_type=school-college-post&#038;p=160917"},"modified":"2020-07-24T15:20:19","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T19:20:19","slug":"uconn-health-commencement-goes-virtual-covid-19-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2020\/05\/uconn-health-commencement-goes-virtual-covid-19-world\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Health Commencement Goes Virtual in a COVID-19 World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even during the COVID-19 pandemic UConn Health found a way to honor its graduating Class of 2020 of 236 new physicians and scientists headed to health care\u2019s frontlines.<\/p>\n<p>On the afternoon of May 11 the 49<sup>th<\/sup> Commencement was held virtually <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/student-affairs\/commencement\/\">online<\/a> conferring 244 degrees upon the graduates of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.uconn.edu\/\">UConn School of Medicine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dentalmedicine.uconn.edu\/\">UConn School of Dental Medicine<\/a>, <\/strong>and the<a href=\"https:\/\/grad.uconn.edu\/\"><strong> UConn Graduate School<\/strong> <\/a>programs.<\/p>\n<p>The virtual commencement ceremony still upheld the schools nearly 50 year tradition of commencement exercises from the keynote address, student speeches, and even the reading of each graduate\u2019s name and degree. Just because today is not what you pictured, does not mean you will not remember it for the rest of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quinones added: \u201cClass of 2020 will forever be the class that persevered despite this pandemic. \u201cTo the resilient class of 2020, I say congratulations! We did it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Medical student commencement speaker, Kathryn Topalis of Simsbury, shared: \u201cI think we can no longer deny that the current pandemic has fundamentally changed medicine, and how we think about our careers and ourselves as physicians will forever be altered. But now we face an intern year that will undoubtedly look far different that any we could have imagined. We will be forced to place our own health at risk for the benefit of others.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"grey-sidebar floating-sidebar col-xs-12 col-sm-4\">\n  <\/p>\n<h3>Class of 2020 by the Numbers<\/h3>\n<p>Since 1972 the School of Medicine has graduated <strong>3,767 doctors<\/strong> and the School of Dental Medicine <strong>1,798 dentists<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Class of 2020 includes from the <strong>School of Medicine<\/strong> <strong>101 new medical physicians <\/strong>with 4 students receiving dual MD\/Masters of Public Health degrees and 2 receiving dual MD\/PhD in Biomedical Science. <strong>The School of Dental Medicine<\/strong> graduated <strong>52 new dental physicians <\/strong>including 1 dual degree of doctorate in medical dentistry DMD\/MPH and 1 student earning an DMD\/PhD in Biomedical Science.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UConn Graduate School<\/strong> programs issued <strong>71 Masters degrees<\/strong> including 5 dual degrees. The class includes degrees of\u00a0Master of Science in Biomedical Science (3), Master of Dental Science (25),\u00a0Master of Science in Clinical &amp; Translational Research (3), Master of Public Health (35), Master of Public Health &#8211; dual degree with Dental Medicine (1),\u00a0Master of Public Health &#8211; dual degree with Medicine (4). Also, <strong>18 PhD degrees<\/strong> were conferred with 3 more students receiving the dual degrees of Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Science (17), Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Science &#8211; dual degree with Dental Medicine (1), Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Science &#8211; dual degree with Medicine (2), and Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health (1).<\/p>\n<p><\/aside>\n<p>This year\u2019s keynote address was given by <a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Deckers-Peter\">Dr. Peter J. Deckers<\/a>, dean emeritus of the medical school and longtime surgical oncologist at UConn Health. He shared with the graduates some of his insights and experiences from across his 54 year medical career. Deckers of UConn Health sharing his commencement address.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cToday, very tragically, the coronavirus has created a true exigency \u2013 a worldwide urgency to control viruses that destroy our cellular RNA and immune systems. Science has done this before; witness the horror of polio that some of us knew as children. Science, perhaps through the efforts of one of you, will do it again,\u201d said Deckers. \u201cI believe you are entering a new season of light \u2013 a new era of profound biomedical discovery. Do \u2018wonderous\u2019 things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bruce T. Liang, dean of the medical school agrees: \u201cYour future is extremely bright despite the ups and downs. You are a special class. You pioneered the introduction and implementation of our new curriculum MDELTA. You are also special in that your match to first choice of residency tops the 3 previous classes. Thank you for a job well-done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are trailblazers,\u201d said Dr. Steve Lepowsky, interim dean of the dental school. \u201cYou are our first class to complete the new team based biomedical sciences curriculum, and you were the first class to face a global pandemic head-on. I congratulate you on all of your remarkable achievements. You will forever be a part of our UConn Dental family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s 2020 UConn Health Board of Directors Faculty Recognition Award was given during commencement to dental faculty member Dr. Alan G. He is investigating how to isolate and identify rare tumor cells in patient\u2019s blood to detect early cancers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of us may not be treating patients directly but from our research comes understanding. From that understanding comes treatments. Then vaccines and then cures to modern ailments that plague ordinary life,\u201d said Keilich. \u201cEven today as many of us shelter in place, we are working from home to analyze data, review literature and persevere. We continue to rise, adapt and evolve with the current forces against us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWe will keep fighting, keep giving, and keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dean Liang concluded: \u201cClass of 2020 congratulations.
