He\u2019s interested in improving animal health by reducing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the number of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> infectious diseases <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">economically affect<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> farmers <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and influence product quality<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">And w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hile he appreciates life in the east, he sees himself returning one day to his home state of Utah. Here\u2019s what he had to say about his experience at UConn.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Where did you study as an undergraduate?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">What was your major?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I attended<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">Utah State University,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> my degree was in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nimal, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">airy and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">v<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">eterinary <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">cience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> with a minor in biology and chemistry.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"more-16728\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Why did you decide to go to graduate school?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I\u2019ve always had an inquisitive mind and have been interested in how biological systems work together. So, while I was an undergraduate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> I joined a research laboratory studying antivirals and I loved it and I wanted to continue researching and learning.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Who is your advisor?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">What is your field of research?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">My advisor is<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/animalscience.uconn.edu\/faculty\/Kristen%20Govoni.php\">Kristen Govoni<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I study a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nimal <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">g<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">rowth and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hysiology, emphasizing the effects of maternal nutrition on fetal development.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Name one aspect of your work that you like.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I enjoy researching and learning how a system or tissue works\u202for changes when certain conditions occur<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and evaluating how mom\u2019s diet influences growth of the offspring.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">like<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> working with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> those<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> animals and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> even more so, I enjoy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> evaluating what is happening in liver and muscle tissue fu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ction of offspring as a result of the mom\u2019s diet and health <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and environmental influences.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">In your opinion, what is your greatest accomplishment so far?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">My greatest accomplishment so far is presenting my research at national and regional conferences and placing\u202fin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> top <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">three<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in a poster competition<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, as well as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> passing my general exams and proposal defense.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">When do you expect to get your degree? What then?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I plan to graduate in<\/span> s<span data-contrast=\"none\">pring 2021.
