funds study of COVID-19 effects on underrepresented STEM students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The COVID pandemic has affected college students worldwide, particularly <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">those from<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> low<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">er<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> socio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">economic backgrounds.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> This<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> issue<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is such a high priority that the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> National Science Foundation has provided grants for research projects relating to effects of COVID-19 on education.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Concerned <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> STEM<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">(s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cience, technology, engineering and mathematics)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> might fall through the cracks during this time, Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturally.uconn.edu\/contributors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sherry Pagoto<\/span><\/a> and<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> co-PI Assistant Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alliedhealth.uconn.edu\/faculty\/waring-molly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Molly Waring<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> both in the Department of Allied Health Sciences (AHS), have joined <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Penn State Professor of Mathematics <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.psu.edu\/mathnate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nate Brown<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for a collaborative project funded <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">through<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> NSF<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to investigate the impact <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of COVID-19 as it relates to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> at-risk undergraduate<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">STEM students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The pandemic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> could create another leak in the STEM pipeline as it pertains to un<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">derrepresented <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students,\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pagoto <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">explains. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen we talk about the STEM pipeline, we already know that women and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">minority <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are underrepresented <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in STEM fields.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are leaks in th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> pipeline from high school to college and beyond.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">students were abruptly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> displaced off-campus and went to online learning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">we realized that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">some <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students may be more impacted in terms of their academic performance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">articularly <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">STEM <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">courses such as math and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">courses <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with lab work.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> What\u2019s irreplaceable about the campus is that it is a learning environment and it\u2019s important for students during their undergraduate years to be in a place where they can focus and immerse themselves.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"more-17102\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students may have had to return to a home where they might not receive the academic support they need or have the technology necessary to complete their work.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> This is especially true for first-generation students.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> They may lack a quiet area to study<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> broadband access<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> may have to share a computer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have had <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to enter the workforce<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> upon returning home<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The research team is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">working to discover additional stresses put on students while living at home. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We were interested to find out if traditional gender roles created a situation where female students were <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">responsible for childcare, eldercare or domestic responsibilities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> which puts more on their plate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d Pagoto notes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">irst phase, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> assembling student focus groups. Brown is a member of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathalliance.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Math Alliance<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a group that includes more than 700 faculty mentors and 900 student participants<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> across the nation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cWe asked Math Alliance faculty to contact students and had a huge response, from over <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1100<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">students,\u201d says <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pagot<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The team will <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">first conduct focus groups with eighty<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> students across the country, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">then<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">use that information to develop a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">survey <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to distribute to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1000 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe want to make sure we are asking the right questions,\u201d says Pagoto. \u201cWe don\u2019t pretend to know all of the things that have gone well or wrong.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cW<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e want to find out <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">how the students have dealt with the pandemic, what struggles they faced and what made it difficult with class work,\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">she e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">xplains. \u201cWe want to look at this as a multi-level exploration including academics, home environment, community, as well as issues such as food insecurity, depression, stress and anxiety.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The team will focus not only on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UConn and Penn State<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">but<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">a cross-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">section of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> schools <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that include<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> those <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that are <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">historically black and Hispanic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> serving<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, as well as private and state schools<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Says Pagoto, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We want to determine which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> students are suffering disproportionately in terms of this pandemic. We also know that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">racial and ethnic <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">minorities have been heavier hit by COVID<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">19,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> so ou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> students <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from these backgrounds <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will more likely have family members impacted, and obviously that will disrupt <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> education.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The team expects to have the results by fall semester\u2019s end and will make recommendations to a network of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">STEM <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">faculty.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We want<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to be able to descr<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be the landscape of the problem and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">find solutions <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on how we might preserve this cohort of underrepresented students in the STEM pipeline<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d Pagot<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> says. \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We don\u2019t want to lose them. We are hearing that some might<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> drop classes,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> take a gap year or <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">leave<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> school entirely. We want to determine what we need to do to keep the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">se<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> students on track academically. If <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they fell behind <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">last<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">semeste<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">it may affect the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ir performance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> next <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">semester<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Once <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a student <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">falls behind<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> it can snowball. W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> want to head it off at the pas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study will also help elucidate the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> challenges <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">invo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ved in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> online learning. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some students may thrive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> but for <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">others it might not be a good fit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d Pagot<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> says. \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It might inform us <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on who is most and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> least like<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to benefit from <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">distance learning in the future.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>This research is supported by National Science Foundation award #2028344.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/naturally.uconn.edu\/2020\/07\/14\/nsf-funds-study-of-covid-19-effects-on-underrepresented-stem-students\/\">This article originally appeared on Naturally@UConn.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The COVID pandemic has affected college students worldwide, particularly those from lower socio\u2013economic backgrounds.
