{"id":162778,"date":"2020-07-29T07:30:29","date_gmt":"2020-07-29T11:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=162778"},"modified":"2020-07-24T15:35:43","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T19:35:43","slug":"koi-people-quantitative-analysis-quarantine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2020\/07\/koi-people-quantitative-analysis-quarantine\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cKoi People,\u201d Quantitative Analysis, and Quarantine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People who keep koi fish care a lot about their carp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe koi person is a very specific kind of person,\u201d says Eva Quigley \u201922 (CANHR), a nutritional sciences major from New Milford who didn\u2019t start her summer knowing much about the big, brightly colored, decorative fish that are popular additions to ornamental ponds and gardens, or about the people who keep them. \u201cPeople who own koi fish really, really love koi fish. They\u2019re very dedicated to keeping their fish beautiful, and they tend to really care about what they\u2019re feeding their koi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie Lacroix \u201922 (SFA) from Mililani, Hawaii, agrees \u2013 koi people want what\u2019s best for their fish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKoi people are passionate individuals who really care about their fish,\u201d says Lacroix, who is studying web and interactive media through UConn\u2019s Digital Media and Design program, \u201cand they want to put the needs of their fish first, whether that be through making sure they have the right nutritional content, making sure they\u2019re energetic, they\u2019re growing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Learning about \u201ckoi people\u201d \u2013 their likes and dislikes, and their priorities when it comes to caring for their fish \u2013 was just one part of the experiential learning project that Lacroix and Quigley embarked on this summer through the pilot cohort of VentureWerx \u2013 a six-week program that pairs entrepreneurial-minded students with a startup company that could benefit from a diverse and skilled team.<\/p>\n<p>Lacroix and Quigley were both part of a four-person team that worked with Pisces Atlantic, <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2020\/04\/uconn-student-entrepreneur-asks-shouldnt-fish-eat-fed-healthier-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a company founded by UConn undergraduate student Peter Goggins<\/a> that is working to manufacture and sell higher quality fish foods. The VentureWerx team specifically focused on products meant for koi fish and koi people.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162894\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162894\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-162894 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/EvaQuigley-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Eva Quigley\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/EvaQuigley-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/EvaQuigley-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/EvaQuigley-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/EvaQuigley-280x420.jpg 280w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eva Quigley (Contributed Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAll of us went in not knowing a lot about koi fish and koi people, and learning how much they care for their fish really helped us see how are we going to market to them, what type of language are we going to use to talk with them, and what social media platforms are going to work best for them,\u201d says Lacroix, who served as the project manager for her VentureWerx team. \u201cAll that research really helped when we were trying to apply the brand persona later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VentureWerx is the brainchild of rising senior Patrick Hocking \u201921 (ENG), a biomedical engineering student from Middletown, Conn., and member of the inaugural cohort of <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.uconn.edu\/about\/werth-innovators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Werth Innovators<\/a> \u2013 student ambassadors for entrepreneurship and innovation through <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Peter J. Werth Institute for Entrepreneurship &amp; Innovation<\/a>. In a previous project called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationhartford.com\/greenhorn-connects-small-businesses-with-skilled-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greenhorn<\/a>, he said he had taken on roles that traditionally would have taken significant education and background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were able to learn on the fly and still find success,\u201d Hocking says. \u201cMany other students have the same capability, if given the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hocking later was recruited by Werth Institute Director David Noble to manage a consulting-like project working with a small team and an alumni startup, and the two began talking about how a similar project could be implemented in a more organized way.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting VentureWerx pilot became a reality this year with support from the Werth Institute; VentureWerx will be housed with the<a href=\"https:\/\/ccei.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Connecticut Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CCEI)<\/a> if it is made a permanent offering to students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have students across all schools with creative energy that they really don&#8217;t have outlets for at the moment, and what Werth does is give students the confidence to put that energy into solving real problems,\u201d says Hocking. \u201cVentureWerx is part of a broader movement to recognize that not every entrepreneur is the employee number one, Silicon Valley, visionary type, but instead come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noble said that VentureWerx is unique in that most entrepreneurial programs have a tremendous amount of oversight and rules guiding student activity and projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn these pilots we have simply activated the students, set out a number of goals, and let them accomplish them,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>For the Pisces Atlantic team, the freedom the program offered was at first daunting, especially as all the team members were working remotely during the pandemic \u2013 and managing the practical challenges of time difference, with Lacroix at home in Hawaii. We didn\u2019t have to just follow a guideline, necessarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lacroix says the client was ultimately happy with the work the group provided and even hired one team member as an employee of the startup. The VentureWerx experience made her more confident in her abilities as a leader and taught her the importance of open communication when working in a team, especially in a virtual environment, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like we got really close over the course of the six weeks,\u201d Lacroix says. \u201cI don\u2019t know quite when it happened, but it went from being professional coworkers together to being pretty good friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cBeing able to work with a diverse group of individuals who have a like-minded skill set is one of the best things I\u2019ve done at UConn. You really can just put together all of these different skills and come out with these incredible results, and that\u2019s what I like about the Werth Institute. All of us come from different majors, even different years, different places, and we just have this similar mindset \u2013 we want to create, we want to learn, we want to be something more and do more. And that\u2019s what the Werth Institute gives us a platform to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The experience was inspiring for Quigley, allowing her to see what it was like to start a business as a student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s never really something I considered until I was involved with the Werth Institute and with VentureWerx,\u201d Quigley says. \u201cWhile I\u2019m studying nutrition, there\u2019s definitely the thought in the back of my mind that I could start my own nutrition-related business or something like that because of the work I\u2019ve done. It\u2019s interesting to see how someone so young and still a student is able to run this business \u2013 it\u2019s given me a lot of inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noble says that VentureWerx aligns with the \u201clife-transformative education\u201d that the Werth Institute is working to make available to students at UConn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started this because we have a vision of students helping students, and we know that there are students out there that want to be part of entrepreneurial teams,\u201d says Noble. \u201cThe entrepreneur gets a building block of their nascent enterprise built with very little relative interaction by extremely talented students. Students again learn those skills, but they also learn about interesting things, like koi fish!
