{"id":162793,"date":"2020-07-28T07:00:15","date_gmt":"2020-07-28T11:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=162793"},"modified":"2020-07-28T10:33:52","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T14:33:52","slug":"public-health-nutrition-experts-call-companies-stop-misleading-labeling-toddler-milks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2020\/07\/public-health-nutrition-experts-call-companies-stop-misleading-labeling-toddler-milks\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Health, Nutrition Experts Call on Companies to Stop Misleading Labeling of &#8216;Toddler Milks&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">On Tuesday, July 28, leading nutrition experts, child health organizations and advocates, and researchers &#8211; including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uconnruddcenter.org\/\">the UConn Rudd Center for Food Policy &amp; Obesity<\/a> &#8211; petitioned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to establish regulations for labeling products sold as \u201ctoddler milks\u201d (also known as \u201ctoddler formula\u201d or \u201ctoddler drinks\u201d). They recommended additional regulations to ensure that caregivers are not misled into purchasing nutritionally inferior and unnecessary products for their infants and toddlers. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/healthydrinkshealthykids.org\/\">Child health experts<\/a><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> do not recommend serving toddler milks to young children. Most toddler milks consist of non-fat dried milk, added sugars (like corn syrup solids). and vegetable oil. They contain more sodium and less protein than plain milk, and they can cost four times as much. Yet from <\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/uconnruddcenter.org\/files\/Pdfs\/USToddlerMilkSales.pdf\">2016 to 2015,<\/a><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> advertising spending on toddler milks increased four-fold, and volume sales increased 2.6 times. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Furthermore, current labeling of toddler milks confuses consumers and misleads parents to believe these drinks are nutritious and necessary for young children.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00b7<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0px; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 106%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Consumers often confuse toddler milk with infant formula because their packages look similar, and some caregivers <\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 106%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/mcn.12962\">mistakenly give toddler milk<\/a><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 106%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> to their infants \u2013 which can be dangerous. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00b7<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0px; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 106%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Formula companies have introduced another category of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 106%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201ctransition\u201d formulas<\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 106%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> that they say are for infants <i>and <\/i>toddlers (9-24 months old), but these products are simply repackaged infant formula, which is not appropriate to serve children older than 12 months.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00b7<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0px; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 106%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The <\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 106%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/mcn.12962\">claims<\/a><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 106%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> on toddler milk packages imply numerous benefits for toddlers\u2019 nutrition, cognitive development and growth, but there is no scientific evidence to support these claims.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSugar-sweetened toddler milks with labels that imply these products are necessary to meet the nutritional needs of young children is the perfect recipe to increase formula company profits &#8212; but the wrong recipe for children\u2019s nutrition and long-term health,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">says <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Jennifer L. Harris, PhD, MBA, one of the experts and senior research advisor at the Rudd Center<\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">. <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u201cThe FDA must establish regulations to ensure that companies can no longer mislead consumers to believe that toddler milks are beneficial for young children.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Specifically, the petition calls on the FDA to: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00b7<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0px; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 106%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Enforce current regulations against misbranded \u201ctransition formula\u201d products represented or purported to be for children 9 to more than 12 months of age;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00b7<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0px; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 106%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Amend current regulations to expressly prohibit the use of the term \u201cinfant formula\u201d or \u201cformula\u201d on any drink products represented or purported to be for use by children more than 12 months old; and<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00b7<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0px; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 106%; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Amend current regulations to establish a common name for nonstandardized beverages represented to be for use by children 12 to 36 months old, and to require disclaimers to clarify age of use and proper nutrition for young children. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The citizen petition was submitted to the FDA on July 28, 2020.
