For three years as an undergraduate in assistant professor Julie Fosdick\u2019s geoscience laboratory, she got to examine samples of four-billion-year-old rocks<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nd she was crushing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI could do rock crushing, which is where you crush rocks in a metal bowl with your hands, or I could do gold panning, like they did during the gold rush,\u201d Providence says.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">After crushing and sifting through grains of zircon and apatite mineral<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0she assessed the quality, sorting out microscopic grains if they had been damaged in the process. Then, Providence would put the sample on a tray with alcohol solution, don a lab coat and special eye cancer-blocking goggles, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">test the rock in a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0helium thermochronology laser<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The test would help to determine how old the rocks, which came from along major fault lines in California, are. Understanding their age will help scientists better understand earthquake activity.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWhen I was a freshman, I came almost every day in the summer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and I would do that process for eight hours a day<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I loved it,\u201d she says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">But when the coronavirus pandemic caused colleges to transition to online-only classes, Providence lost access to her samples<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and had to figure out another wa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to study what she loved<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This summer, she and other CLAS student researchers overcame obstacles posed by the pandemic to continue their research and produce results by adapting their methods to working from home.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Alexandra\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Frenzel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u201821 (CLAS), a marine science major, has been researching genetic diversity of zooplankton, planktonic organisms that are vitally important to the ocean\u2019s ecosystems.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As an undergraduate in Professor\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of Marine Science\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ann Bucklin\u2019s lab,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Frenzel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0did a lot of benchwork, which involved extracting zooplankton DNA, putting DNA material into tubes to make copies, and generating DNA barcodes for various zooplankton species.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Similar to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0barcodes on items in a store, DNA barcodes help to identify species by their unique label.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI have been more interested in smaller organisms at the base of the food webs because not only is the ecosystem structure built on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0but they also play vital roles in biogeochemical cycling in the oceans,\u201d she says. By studying the microscopic ocean\u00a0life, she learns more about the dynamic components of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ocean as a whole<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe had fresh samples<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and I would have done lab work before doing the analysis steps, but we had to change the whole plan,\u201d she says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Without access to her samples,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Frenzel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0had to switch her thesis entirely, pivoting to a more accessible dataset.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Instead of plankton, she\u2019s now exploring gene expression in beluga whales from a dataset provided by Connecticut\u2019s Mystic Aquarium.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The data demonstrate differential gene expression from two different populations of beluga whales<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, one from a more pristine ocean environment northwest of Alaska, and one from an area with a higher surrounding human population, and therefore greater external stressors.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cMy research trajectory has changed a lot since COVID-19 because I&#8217;ve delved way deeper into computer programs than I previously would have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u201d she says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt sucks to not be able to be in the lab. double minor in geography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has learned new methods of finding and using digital archives for his research on migration and housing among the Black, Puerto Rican, and West Indian communities in Hartford, Conn.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">He and his research advisor, Fiona Vernal, associate professor of history and Africana studies, are trying to get an accurate picture of Hartford in the 20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Century to track the migration of those communities as housing changed in the capital city.\u00a0<\/span><span wasn\u2019t enough to handle coding up to 30,000 addresses, so he had a custom computer built.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">explor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0constructions of loneliness as presented in English literature, targeting 19th-Century Victorian literature, modern adult fiction, and youth loneliness in young adult literature.\u00a0<\/span><span As<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a SURF awardee, Providence is discovering why and how ancient samples of apatite rocks along the San Andreas border in southern California moved over the past eight to nine million years. Her work could help scientists better track and predict movement along the active fault line.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Her project uses a helium thermochronology laser to date the rock samples by quantifying the timing of erosion rates and uplift along the southern San Andreas border fault. As the designated operator of the laser, Providence felt \u201cvery scientific\u201d every time she used it.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cBasically, I have six samples of rock\u2014three from one area, and three\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">another area.
