A virtual celebration to mark the occasion will<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0be held<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Thursday, September 17, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from 1:00 to 2:30 PM<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to achieving this milestone, in May 2020, the department <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">ranked seventh of ninety-six<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0similar programs in the nation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> as reported by Academic Analytics.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe are proud of what we have done for the last fifty years, particularly our contribution to the human nutrition field,\u201d says\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Professor <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nusc.uconn.edu\/people-faculty-lee.php\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ji-Young Lee<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, department head. \u201cTo achieve another fifty years of excellence in improving human health, the Department of Nutritional Sciences has set our first initiative, personalized <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nutrition.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The faculty in my department have the expertise to carry out this initiative, and we believe personalized nutrition is the future of human nutrition. We are currently developing an entrepreneurial <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">master of science<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> program in this field, which we plan to launch in fall 2021. From this program we will produce the next generation of the human nutrition workforce.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"more-16368\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe field of nutrition has evolved over the past fifty years,\u201d says<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Professor Emeritus Hedley <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Freake<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cIn the late 1960s, the White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health focused on under-nutrition, when the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.choosemyplate.gov\/eathealthy\/dietary-guidelines\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">USDA Dietary Guidelines<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f were established. The department held a contest to name the new tasty treat, which resulted in a tie between suggestions from Amy Krupski (BA, CDIS \u201906) and Kathy Parlin (NUSC main office staff). Original faculty members included Matterson (nutrition), Jensen (lipid research), Hamilton Eaton (nutrition), Ken Hall (food science), Joseph Rousseau (food science chemistry), Edwin Singsen (nutrition), Ralph Somes (genetics) Walter Pudelkiewicz (biochemistry), Sarah Hunt (nutrition and disease) and Ingeborg <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MacKellar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(nutrition).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Deborah<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Virella<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Eaton\u2019s daughter, will speak at the event<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">His distinguished career focused on vitamin A research, and in 1998 he was elected as a Fellow of the American Society for Nutritional Sciences.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0annual<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Hamilton D. Eaton Award for Research Excellence was established in 1987.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since its inception, the department has awarded some 1,436 bachelor\u2019s degrees, 332 master\u2019s degrees and 173 Ph.D. degrees.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Patricia Anthony is currently senior director of organizational growth at the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in Silver Spring, MD. She says, \u201cMy memories from UConn are good\u2014I had fun and received an excellent education that gave me a solid basis for my career.\u202fI remember Dr. Elizabeth McCosh-Lilie. Her classes were tough, but I learned a lot from food chemistry (baking soda turned broccoli purple!) to therapeutic nutrition. I took my first nutrition assessment class from Dr. Lindsay Allen \u2013 a topic that is still critical to all dietitians today.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI was an early president of the Nutrition Club, and I remember selling cookbooks to raise money\u2014not sure what we did with the money we raised, but still have some of the cookbooks!\u202fI remember sitting on a hill near the nutrition building when I didn\u2019t get a dietetic internship, wondering about my next steps.\u202fIt turned out to be grad school, and I was well prepared, thanks to UConn.
