{"id":165470,"date":"2020-10-21T13:39:50","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T17:39:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=165470"},"modified":"2021-04-13T16:28:59","modified_gmt":"2021-04-13T20:28:59","slug":"3d-printed-prosthetic-breast-grant-awarded-uconn-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2020\/10\/3d-printed-prosthetic-breast-grant-awarded-uconn-health\/","title":{"rendered":"3D Printed Prosthetic Breast Grant Awarded to UConn Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctbhi.org\/\">Connecticut Breast Health Initiative<\/a> has awarded a $50,000 grant to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bme.uconn.edu\/uc-health-bme\/\">Biomedical Engineering Department at UConn Health<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 The grant announced during Breast Cancer Awareness month is the largest of three to be awarded.\u00a0 It will be used to fund its <strong><em>Personalized 3D Printed Breast Forms Project<\/em><\/strong><em>,<\/em> which will create personalized 3D breast forms for breast cancer patients who have had a mastectomy but have not had breast reconstruction.<\/p>\n<p>The personalized, 3D printed, form will replace the standard form which women say are uncomfortable, heavy, sweaty, and not an exact match.\u00a0 The 3D printed breast form is a prosthetic that will not be implanted but used within a bra or swimsuit to restore symmetry and aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-165472 alignleft img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/3d-breast-photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"174\" height=\"149\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 174px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 174\/149;\" \/>This form will be different from those made previously, due to recent advances in 3D scanners and 3D bioprinters.\u00a0 It will be a 3D porous lattice covered with a breathable fabric that is a match in both the front and back of the women\u2019s shape.\u00a0 It is an advance that will make a difference in women\u2019s lives as they navigate the challenges of breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new design for a breast prosthesis will have a significant impact on our patients\u2019 quality of life after mastectomy. We are excited to be able to offer it to our patients at UConn Health,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Stevenson-Christina\">Christina Stevenson<\/a>, MD, MS, FACS, Associate Professor of Surgery at UConn Health.<\/p>\n<p>The funds will strengthen the partnership between UConn Health Biomedical Engineering and the <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/cancer\/\">Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center<\/a>, and confidential feedback will be sought from women to further optimize the design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis research project will allow me, and the female engineering .students assisting me, directly help women cancer survivors overcome challenges and concerns over their appearance post-mastectomy,\u201d added <a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Kuhn-Liisa\">Liisa Kuhn<\/a>, BS, MS, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at UConn Health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe entire CT BHI Board of Directors and its Grant Committee are thrilled to support UConn Health\u2019s 3D personalized breast form project. As the daughter of a 32-year survivor dealing with mastectomy issues, I know very clearly how important this leading-edge development is for post-mastectomy patients who do not choose reconstruction,\u201d said Joyce Bray, President, Board of Directors, Connecticut Breast Health Initiative (CT BHI).\u00a0 \u201cThis is truly groundbreaking!
