{"id":168754,"date":"2021-02-04T07:03:50","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T12:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=168754"},"modified":"2021-04-28T09:36:41","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T13:36:41","slug":"black-lives-matter-co-founder-to-open-black-history-month-celebration-at-uconn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2021\/02\/black-lives-matter-co-founder-to-open-black-history-month-celebration-at-uconn\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Lives Matter Co-Founder to Open Black History Month Celebration at UConn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UConn\u2019s celebration of Black History Month will be comprised of virtual events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that will not make it any less significant or important.<\/p>\n<p>The month of workshops, presentations, and other activities will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4 with the program \u201cWhen They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Dialogue with Patrisse Cullors.\u201d Cullors is the co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network and founder of Dignity and Power Now \u2013 a Los Angeles-based grass roots organization. Cullors was recognized in Time magazine\u2019s 2020 \u201c100 Women of the Year\u201d issue.<\/p>\n<p>Cullors is the co-author of the best-selling book \u201cWhen They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir,\u201d an empowering account of survival, strength, and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>Her appearance is presented by the H. Fred Simons African American Cultural Center (AACC) at UConn and is co-sponsored by numerous other units of the University, including the Office of the President and the Office of the Provost.<\/p>\n<p>To attend the virtual event, please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/aacc-virtual-opening-ceremony-w-patrisse-cullors-tickets-136311496355\">RSVP here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer name has always been in my frame of reference because I teach about her and her book in my classes,\u201d says Dr. Willena Kimpson Price<strong>, <\/strong>Director of the AACC and an affiliate faculty member in the Africana Studies Institute. \u201cI had a feeling I was on to something when I started to look into bringing Patrisse to the UConn community. The timing could not be better. I feel our University&#8217;s level of conversation will be elevated to a great degree just hearing from her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other events for Black History Month at UConn are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cullors\u2019 book, which she wrote with Asha Bandele, is the focus of a program called \u201cAACC Reads,\u201d which brings people together once a week in a virtual format to discuss a book.\u00a0 For information on joining that group, please email <a href=\"mailto:paris.pruitt@uconn.edu\">paris.pruitt@uconn.edu<\/a> or <a href=\"odia.kane@uconn.edu\">odia.kane@uconn.edu<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The AACC will present The Black Excellence Showcase on Thursday, Feb. 18.
