Born in\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">1947, Canning grew up in Spokane, Washington. He <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">earned\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">an MA in history at UConn before earning his\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ph.D. in\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">history at<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">the University of Washington<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in 1976<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">. A celebration of his life will be\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">held this summer in Spokane.
