All candidates for the award must be nominated by their school\u2019s president or\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">chancellor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cA staunch advocate for refugees and asylum seekers, Irene has worked extensively to empower survivors of armed conflict and construct institutions that prevent its perpetuation,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UConn\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/compact.org\/newman-civic-fellow\/irene-soteriou\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">President Thomas Katsouleas<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0said on the fellowship website.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u201cIn addition to her work at Genocide Watch, where she has pursued impactful structural change, Irene is currently interning for the US Department of State and volunteering as an English tutor for refugees through Paper Airplanes.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt still feels so surreal to be receiving this honor\u2014all I can say is that I am deeply grateful, both to my mentors for their support and to my parents for raising me with the set of values and sense of community that has organically driven everything I\u2019ve sought to do,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Soteriou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to learning and growing from this amazing cohort, and I hope to come out of this year a more self-aware, inspired, and socially competent person.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Newman Civic Fellowship provides\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a one<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-year learning, networking, and skill-building experience for the students. It includes a national conference, monthly virtual event series, a local mentor, and access to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">scholarship<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and fellowship opportunities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Growing up\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">among refugees<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">where\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Soteriou\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u201cappreciation for collaborative changemaking originated,\u201d she wrote in her personal statement. \u201cI found it impressive that even very small communities like my own, divided by international conflict, could make such powerful strides towards rebuilding when doing so collectively.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My family comes from a very small, beautiful country called Cypru<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a country that has been divided for the last 47 years<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Soteriou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0said. \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My family and nearly everyone they knew became refugees during the initial invasion, and to this day, we are still unable to return and live freely in our homes. Growing up under the shadow of these events, I remember often feeling extremely frustrated with the injustice of it all, and that frustration was compounded by a sense of helplessness.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Through her work at Genocide Watch, an organization that exists to prevent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and punish forms of mass murder,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Soteriou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has co<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ntributed to the passage of legislation for mandated genocide education in U.S. secondary schools, the community-grounded implementation of the Global Fragility Act, and the development of an early warning network to alert governments, relief and health workers, and journalists to genocidal processes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cCommunity defines nearly everything that I do because, especially coming from such a small and often overlooked community, I recognize that I hold a tremendous degree of privilege in being able to attend a University like UConn and access the wealth of resources that I do to learn and grow,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a student,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Soteriou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0founded the annual\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UConn\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Human Rights Symposium, serves as Deputy Speaker of the Undergraduate Student Government, and works at the Center for Career Development, where she le<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an effort to help non-native English speakers, formerly incarcerated individuals, and others from historically underserved or marginalized communities\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">better prepare for employment opportunities.
