I have wanted to be a veterinarian since I was a child. I learned that UConn has one the best Animal Science programs in the country due to the type and rigor of classes offered, the professors in active research, and the experiences outside of the classroom. From microbiology to livestock production management to nutrition to vaccine creation, I was blown away by all the possibilities of an Animal Science degree.

What activities were you involved with as a student?
UConn has many ways to get involved on campus. I was an Animal Science student ambassador, involved in Greek life, a UConn Rec group fitness instructor, and on the Academic Integrity Committee. I had a Summer Barn Management internship on campus and was a part of multi-generational livestock research project the past two years to write my honors thesis.

How has UConn prepared you for the next chapter in life?
UConn has prepared me both academically and mentally for my next chapter in life. I have been exposed to many different perspectives, and have become more confident in myself and what I believe in. UConn fosters a sense of self and also a place to be heard. For graduate school, I know the rigor of my coursework has prepared me well to stay focused and determined at making the best of my education.

What’s something you learned in a class that you’ll always remember?
Do your own research and don’t believe everything on a label. In my freshman Intro to Animal Science class, I learned about all the misconceptions in animal products. I have applied that advice to my life and always do my own research first.

Any advice for incoming first-year students?
I wish someone had told me freshman year that you don’t have to do everything at once. You have time. As long as you go out of your comfort zone, you will surprise yourself and the things you find interest in.

What’s one thing that will always make you think of UConn?
The fall. Around Horsebarn Hill, especially right before the leaves fall, the view is breathtaking.
