{"id":172647,"date":"2021-05-08T17:54:48","date_gmt":"2021-05-08T21:54:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=172647"},"modified":"2021-05-10T11:35:26","modified_gmt":"2021-05-10T15:35:26","slug":"historic-50th-commencement-for-uconn-schools-of-medicine-and-dental-medicine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2021\/05\/historic-50th-commencement-for-uconn-schools-of-medicine-and-dental-medicine\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic 50th Commencement for UConn Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UConn Health marked a historic milestone on May 8 with its 50<sup>th<\/sup> Commencement ceremony for the Class of 2021\u2019s new 107 physicians and 47 dentists from UConn School of Medicine and UConn School of Dental Medicine held at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"UConn Health&#039;s 50th Commencement\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V3w9H70cWzs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/totalwebcasting.com\/viewcompat\/?func=VIEW&amp;id=uconncommencement&amp;date=2021-05-08&amp;seq=3\">livestreamed event<\/a> celebrated 154 graduating medical and dental school students following in the footsteps of UConn Health\u2019s first Class of 1972 graduates. Since then the School of Medicine has graduated 3,874 physicians and the School of Dental Medicine 1,845 dentists.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s combined outdoor event due to COVID-19 honored all UConn Health medical, dental, and its other UConn Graduate School program students including celebration of those earning 105 Master&#8217;s (74) or Ph.D. (31) degrees since December 2020 at UConn Health. Plus, degrees were conferred upon UConn\u2019s other Doctoral, Pharm. Liang, dean of the School of Medicine<\/strong> in his Commencement address. \u201cNo matter what &#8212; you never gave up. Not even an once-in-a-lifetime pandemic could stop your momentum &#8211; nor prevent you from reaching your ultimate goal of standing here before us and your loved ones today to receive your advanced degree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liang added: \u201cJust like our dental school, the UConn School of Medicine today begins to celebrate our 50<sup>th<\/sup> golden anniversary year of producing nearly 4,000 physicians in our rich- and half-a-century school\u2019s history. Developing our professional identities in this time has forged a connection to the power and privilege our roles encompass,&#8221;<\/span> said Merrick who is returning to her home state of Vermont for a general practice residency at the University of Vermont Medical Center and plans to enter comprehensive general dentistry. &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m proud of us, Class of 2021, for the professionals we have become. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thank you.
