She didn\u2019t realize that it would be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0turning point in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0her\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">experience with social justice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After a group of students were arrested for shouting racial slurs on campus at UConn Storrs,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tudents representing the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uconntact.uconn.edu\/organization\/blackstudentsassociation\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Black Students Association<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uconntact.uconn.edu\/organization\/naacp\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NAACP of UConn<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and other\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">BIPOC\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">organizations marched in front of the Student Union<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in response to the event<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They marched for the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ir voices to be heard and for the University to stand against racism.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI felt it was very powerful when people were chanting and sharing their stories,\u201d she says. \u201cYou can feel the weight of the experiences and the urgency in demanding justice.&#8221;<\/span><span month earlier, students\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gathered in the same place to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">strike for climate justice, in solidarity with millions of students across the world<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The protests at UConn\u00a0highlighted to\u00a0McFarlane. urban and community studies (UCS) and human development and family sciences (HDFS) double major, how relevant and important her new\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.uconn.edu\/minors\/social-justice-organizing\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">social justice organizing minor<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0more prominent on campus,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">McFarlane and her peers\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are some of the initiatives<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">College of Liberal Arts and Sciences<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(CLAS)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">empowering diverse voices<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and promoting learning and action for equity and social justice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0at UConn.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">learning how\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to apply it and find your own voice even more.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span Against Racism,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">her minor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">led\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">McFarlane<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">intern<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kamorasculturalcorner.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kamora\u2019s Cultural Corner<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(KCC) in Hartford, Connecticut, an organization based on using Black Queer and Afrocentric art to build community connections.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Their weekly community discussions\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">supplemented the lessons<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0about social systems and movements<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0she was learning in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">her<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">class<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">es<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, it\u2019s important for everyone to know their role for the movement to function properly.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span Courtesy photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0many<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0young people often lack the training and education to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">amplify<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0their voices during a social movement<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, she says<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">art of her\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in her capstone class\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">centers on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">educating<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students from as early as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">elementary school to be more socially aware<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At Kamora\u2019s Cultural Corner<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, McFarlane w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">atched<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">edia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0made by Black people, for Black people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. While watching, she focused on conscious witnessing: people becoming aware of what society or the media wants them to see and understanding that they have control over what they see, interpret, and internalize.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A lot of times we just consume the information in a movie or show scene for enjoyment,\u201d McFarlane says. \u201cBut i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nstead<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0I watched and listened to these forms of art and thought about why these Black artists and activists created this and what they were trying to convey through their art.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Back in class with her advisor Jason Chang, associate professor of history<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and director of the Asian and Asian American Studies Institute<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and Alexis Boylan,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">professor\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of art and art history, McFarlane discussed how choosing what\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">people\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">view, and how<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0witness it, is a conscious political act.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">She<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0developed a lesson plan for public school students to encourage them to be more conscious and involved citizens when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">viewing popular media.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Growing up,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">McFarlane loved learning, she says, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">her teachers often encouraged her by telling her that she was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">smart<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This made a difference in her education,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">compared to some of her peers,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and sparked her\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">interest<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0social justice in education.<\/span><span but it gives you opportunities and connections to become more involved in grassroots organization afterwards as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">well,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> McFarlane says. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 After graduating, she wants to use her experience to work in educational policy or advocating for policy and practices that provide public school students with equality, equity and liberty in education.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0coach herself for several minutes befor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e speaking<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">up\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in class.
