{"id":173703,"date":"2021-06-04T15:45:22","date_gmt":"2021-06-04T19:45:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=173703"},"modified":"2021-06-04T15:47:53","modified_gmt":"2021-06-04T19:47:53","slug":"5-decades-of-good-deeds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2021\/06\/5-decades-of-good-deeds\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Decades of Good Deeds"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n  <p>\u201cThe Auxiliary membership past and present deserves our most profound thanks for a foundational effort so very well done!\u201d <cite> &#8212 Dr. Peter Deckers<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s the Creative Child Center, the art collection, a patient and family education center in the Outpatient Pavilion, web cams for premature infants\u2019 isolettes, or even an endowed faculty chair, the UConn Health Auxiliary\u2019s presence will live on at UConn Health long after it disbands this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception in 1969, the Auxiliary, which earned the nickname \u201cThe Good Deed People,\u201d has contributed more than a conservatively estimated $9 million to UConn Health, including decades of scholarships and student awards, the establishment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2013\/11\/health-center-auxiliary-names-patientfamily-education-center\/\">UConn Health Auxiliary Patient and Family Education Center<\/a>, and perhaps most notably, the raising of $900,000 to fund an endowed chair, the Joseph M. Healy Jr. Memorial Chair in Medical Humanities and Bioethics.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"UConn Health Auxiliary: The Good Deed People\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yNMI0G55P5A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Auxiliary\u2019s fundraising arms over the years included the Connucopia Gift Shop, a Thrift Shop in West Hartford, and the regular presence of outside vendors renting space at UConn Health to offer their wares. Most years, many of the vendors came at the same time for the Auxiliary\u2019s winter holiday and springtime fairs. (Photo by Tina Encarnacion)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe gift shop has always been a primary source of revenue for the Auxiliary, but more importantly, it has become the friendly face of UConn Health to staff and visitors alike,\u201d says Debbie Baril, the Auxiliary\u2019s facilitator and, since 2006, manager of the gift shop.<\/p>\n<p>In a message to the UConn Health Community, Dr. Andy Agwunobi, UConn Health CEO and interim University president, said his leadership team is working on solutions to try to make up for the loss of the gift shop, including consideration of a retail pharmacy in the same area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile to many of us the closing of the gift shops will be the most visible and immediately noticeable impact of losing the Auxiliary, the void will be much larger than that,\u201d Agwunobi says. \u201cIf you\u2019ve spent any time at UConn Health over the years \u2014 as an employee, student, patient, or visitor \u2014 chances are you\u2019ve been touched by something the Auxiliary was a part of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The contributions have gone beyond direct financial support. <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/campus-planning\/art-collection\/\">UConn Health\u2019s art collection<\/a> originated as an Auxiliary collection in 1979.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89049\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89049\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-89049 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/engel_irene-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Irene Engel (UConn Foundation Photo)\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/engel_irene-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/engel_irene-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/engel_irene-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/engel_irene.jpg 700w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/200;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89049\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Irene Engel goes back to the early days of UConn Health and the Auxiliary. (2012 UConn Foundation Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cGetting the art for the hospital was the beginning of trying to make patients more comfortable, to make their hospital stay feel more pleasant, to make it feel like you weren\u2019t in the hospital all the time,\u201d says Irene Engel, who served as the Auxiliary\u2019s facilitator from shortly after her retirement in 1996 through 2018. \u201cWe didn\u2019t just want to make it fun and happy for patients, but also fun and happy for faculty and students. That was our goal, to make people want to come to work every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris Kaminski, a longtime UConn Health employee and Auxiliary member and past facilitator, says, \u201cAs a member, it was rewarding to know the events and activities that I was a part of would support various patient-related programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellen Cartun has been an Auxiliary member since 2003, when she started volunteering at the gift shop, and she\u2019s served on the board as treasurer for the last 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have had the opportunity to work with many remarkable and inspiring women during this time,\u201d Cartun says. \u201cI am very proud of all the wonderful programs that the Auxiliary has sponsored as a direct result of our fundraising efforts. It is certainly a sad day to see this all come to an end. (Kristin Wallace\/UConn Health photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1977, UConn Health was one of the first state agencies to make on-site child care available to its employees, when the Auxiliary opened the <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/creative-child-center\/\">Creative Child Center<\/a>. Nine years later, after securing a grant and building on campus, the Auxiliary turned the child care center over to UConn Health.<\/p>\n<p>The connection with the Creative Child Center lived on; in 2009, attendees contributed their artwork when the Auxiliary joined the American Mural Project, an effort to create the world\u2019s largest indoor collaborative artwork. It includes a sculpture made of individually painted tongue depressors, hundreds of them the handiwork of Creative Child Center children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom its beginning, the Auxiliary was a powerful , reliable consistent engine that supplied needed critical energy to the research, educational and clinical missions of UConn Health and its Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine and Biomedical Research,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Deckers-Peter\">Dr. Peter Deckers<\/a>, UConn Health\u2019s executive vice president for health affairs from 2000 through 2007 and medical dean from 1995 to 2007.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62370\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62370\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-62370 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/auxiliary_scholarships_2012-01-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Auxiliary Facilitator Irene Engel (right) and dental professor Art Hand present a scholarship to periodontology resident Michele Furtado Araujo (left) at the Auxiliary's 2012 annual meeting on June 21, 2012. (Chris DeFrancesco\/UConn Health Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt truly was an Auxiliary for all people at the Health Center, not just John Dempsey Hospital,\u201d Engel says.<\/p>\n<p>From the start, breaking from the traditional model of a hospital auxiliary consisting of doctors\u2019 wives, the UConn Health Auxiliary welcomed all to be members. (2016 Photo by Janine Gelineau)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two significant, more recent contributions of note involve what is now the Connecticut Children\u2019s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the UConn John Dempsey Hospital. In 2008, the Auxiliary introduced <a href=\"http:\/\/today.uchc.edu\/features\/2008\/may08\/preemies.html\">The Family Place at Homewood Suites<\/a>, a two-bedroom suite dedicated for use by parents who needed a nearby place to stay, for free, while their infant was in the NICU. In 2014, the Auxiliary partnered with the Farmington Rotary Club to provide webcams to allow parents (and others the parents authorize) to see their infant remotely in real time.<\/p>\n<p>Also in 2008, the Auxiliary <a href=\"http:\/\/today.uchc.edu\/newsreleases\/2008\/may08\/child_safety.html\">brought the WHALE car seat safety program to Connecticut<\/a>. (Photo by Defining Studios\/Roger Castonguay)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMany scholarships, awards celebrating meritorious achievements, cutting-edge research tools, academic space refurbishing, even creation of a dedicated endowed chair celebrating the medical humanities, were funded through the efforts of many committed altruistic people guided by the continued input of the time, talent, even personal resources and leadership of true \u2018angels\u2019 like Nan Kennedy, Irene Engel, Ellen Cartun , Jeanne Lattanzio, and many others too numerous to name,\u201d Deckers says. \u201cTheir efforts were true stewardship of the highest quality. They further assured that the gifts of the Auxiliary were given at just the right time in the right way recognizing the most deserving. These gifts continue to give, and assuredly will have a durable long-term positive impact in the life of the Health Center.
