{"id":177623,"date":"2021-09-24T11:45:44","date_gmt":"2021-09-24T15:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=177623"},"modified":"2023-06-27T12:37:53","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T16:37:53","slug":"dodd-impacts-2021-malka-penn-award-honors-this-is-my-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2021\/09\/dodd-impacts-2021-malka-penn-award-honors-this-is-my-america\/","title":{"rendered":"Dodd Impact\u2019s 2021 Malka Penn Award Honors This is My America"},"content":{"rendered":"Dodd Impact\u2019s 2021 Malka Penn Award Honors This is My America <\/em><\/strong>\r\n\r\nDebut novel from author Kim Johnson offers\r\nyoung readers a critical look at justice in America<\/em>\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nLauded by critics for its crucial look at justice in the United States, This is My America<\/em> by author Kim Johnson<\/a> has been recognized as the 2021 recipient of the Malka Penn Award for Human Rights in Children\u2019s Literature, presented by Dodd Human Rights Impact at UConn.\r\n\r\n\u201cKim Johnson has delivered a gripping story that tackles the human rights issues of historical racism, corruption, police brutality, and incarceration at a critical moment in our society,\u201d says Glenn Mitoma, director of Dodd Human Rights Impact and an assistant professor in the Neag School of Education. \u201cWe are honored to recognize her work and the important message that This is My America<\/em> brings to youth who are living amidst the struggle against systemic racism and fighting to redefine what equity truly means in the United States.\u201d\r\n\r\nPublished in 2020, This is My America<\/em>, a compelling debut young adult novel from Johnson, tells the story of 17-year-old Tracy Beaumont, whose father sits on death row convicted of a murder he did not commit. Each week, she writes letters to Innocence X, imploring them to take her father\u2019s case. When her brother then becomes a murder suspect, she sets out to unearth the truth behind the crimes and to reveal the roots of prejudice in the American justice system.\r\n\r\nProducers recently announced that This is My America <\/em>is under development for television for HBO Max<\/a>.\r\n\r\nThe Malka Penn Award is given annually to the author of an outstanding children\u2019s book addressing human rights issues or themes, such as discrimination, equity, poverty, justice, war, peace, slavery or freedom.\r\n\r\nNamed in honor of author Michele Palmer \u2013 who writes under the pseudonym Malka Penn \u2013 the award recognizes works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, memoir, or biography and written for children from preschool to high school. Special consideration is given to stories about individuals who have been affected by social injustices and who, by confronting those injustices, have made a difference in their lives or the lives of others.\r\n\r\nAn award ceremony conveying the 2021 Malka Penn Award, featuring Johnson as well as a professional development workshop on anti-racism through literature, will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center at the UConn Storrs Campus.\r\n\r\nIn addition to This is My America<\/em>, the Malka Penn Award Committee has recognized the following selections as its 2021 Honor Books:\r\n\r\nEverything Sad is Untrue<\/em>, by Daniel Nayeri<\/a> \u2013 In this autobiographical novel, 12-year-old Iranian refugee Khosru \u2013 forced to flee with his mother and sister \u2013 is now a middle schooler in Oklahoma. Recognizing that he is perceived as \u201csuper weird\u201d by his classmates, he defends himself through storytelling, revealing his family history and the history of his homeland to the increasingly captivated audience of his classmates and teachers.\r\n\r\nMexique: A Refugee Story from the Spanish Civil War<\/em>, by Maria Jos\u00e9 Ferrada<\/a> and illustrated by Ana Penyas<\/a> \u2013 Imaginative and expressive, Mexique <\/em>tells the story of Los Ni\u00f1os de Morelia \u2013 the displaced children of the Spanish Civil War who, in 1937, boarded the ship Mexique bound for Mexico and what their parents hoped would be safety \u2013 through the perspective of a child aboard the boat.\r\n\r\nDear Justyce<\/em>, by Nic Stone<\/a> \u2013 Two boys from the same neighborhood, with a shared love of reading and hope for the future, find themselves on two different paths.\r\n\r\nStand Up! Speak Up!<\/em>, by Andrew Joyner<\/a> \u2013 A picture book that shares steps readers can take to be a climate activist, Stand Up! Speak Up!<\/em> is a quick read that is perfect to start to engage children in activism and climate justice.\r\n\r\nNana Akua Goes to School<\/em>, by Tricia Elam Walker<\/a> and April Harrison<\/a> \u2013 Zura worries about how her classmates will react to her grandmother, who has tribal markings on her face, during Grandparents Day at school.
