Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\u00a0Professor Michael R. Willig, is the 2021 recipient of the\u00a0<\/span>C. Hart Merriam Award<\/span>\u00a0from\u00a0the American Society of Mammologists (ASM) on its 100th anniversary.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The award recognizes Willig\u2019s\u00a0enduring\u00a0dedication to a\u00a0multidisciplinary approach\u00a0to\u00a0studying and teaching\u00a0mammalogy\u2014the\u00a0biology\u00a0of mammals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Willig is\u00a0also\u00a0the founding\u00a0executive\u00a0director of\u00a0UConn\u2019s\u00a0Institute of the Environment, director of the Center for Environmental Sciences\u00a0and\u00a0Engineering, and curator of mammals for the Biodiversity Research Collections.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The C. Hart Merriam Award commemorates\u00a0its namesake,\u00a0the first president of\u00a0ASM,\u00a0who is\u00a0considered\u00a0the father of\u00a0mammalogy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Willig’s\u00a0<\/span>research<\/span><\/a>\u00a0includes\u00a0ecology,\u00a0biogeography\u00a0and conservation biology. His research\u00a0primarily\u00a0focuses\u00a0on\u00a0mammals such as bats,\u00a0especially their\u00a0population\u00a0and\u00a0community ecology\u00a0or\u00a0biodiversity.\u00a0Willig has published his research globally,\u00a0and is cited over 26,000 times.\u00a0Willig has\u00a0conducted\u00a0funded research\u00a0in Peru, Brazil,\u00a0Paraguay\u00a0and Puerto Rico, as well as in the US. According to\u00a0ASM,\u00a0he\u00a0is among the\u00a0<\/span>top 2<\/span><\/a>\u00a0percent\u00a0of distinguished ecologists in the world.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
