{"id":178206,"date":"2021-10-12T12:12:57","date_gmt":"2021-10-12T16:12:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=178206"},"modified":"2021-10-14T09:03:58","modified_gmt":"2021-10-14T13:03:58","slug":"article-published-in-nature-aging-journal-features-work-by-uconn-center-on-aging-researchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2021\/10\/article-published-in-nature-aging-journal-features-work-by-uconn-center-on-aging-researchers\/","title":{"rendered":"Article Published in Nature Aging Journal Features Work by UConn Center on Aging Researchers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Research-scientists and physicians at UConn Health, in collaboration with researchers at the Mayo Clinic, have just had an article documenting new work published in <em>Nature Aging<\/em>, the prestigious journal produced by this international print, online and educational organization dedicated to aging research and study.<\/p>\n<p>The article, \u201cAn Inducible p21-Cre Mouse Model to Monitor and Manipulate p21-Highly-Expressing Senescent Cells In Vivo,\u201d appears in the new issue of <em>Nature Aging<\/em>. Ming Xu, PhD, assistant professor in the UConn Center on Aging and the department of Genetics and Genome Sciences at the University of Connecticut Health Center, is the senior and communicating author. Nathan Gasek, a researcher enrolled in UConn Health\u2019s MD PhD training program, is one of the first authors, along with UConn Health researchers Dr. Binsheng Wang and Dr. Lichao Wang.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Nature Aging<\/em> journal includes studies on the biology of aging and longevity examining aging at a biological level and exploring efforts at harnessing those biological processes to prolong life span and health span. This new model allows us to monitor, sort, image, eliminate or modulate senescent cells <em>in vivo<\/em>, and could initiate a new avenue of research to further understand the biology of senescent cells.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UConn Center on Aging was recently named, by the National Institute on Aging at NIH, the home for a prestigious Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center at UConn (UConn OAIC) grant. There are only 14 other \u201cPepper Centers\u201d of excellence nationwide, named in honor of the late U.S. Senator who championed research and education aimed at helping older adults maintain their independence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis article represents a significant contribution from several UConn researchers, in concert with colleagues at Mayo Clinic, to advance the field of geroscience and in this way help to ultimately improve health in older adults through research,\u201d says George Kuchel, MD, director, UConn Center on Aging (and professor, Travelers Chair in Geriatrics and Gerontology). \u201cWe are proud of their achievements, and know their work will continue producing invaluable aging breakthroughs going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOI number for this paper will be 10.1038\/s43587-021-00107-6.
