(Tina Encarnacion\/UConn Health photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">On Wednesday, November 17 \u00a0Jeffrey Aeschlimann, Pharm.D.,\u00a0Associate Professor, School of Pharmacy, and Adjunct Associate Professor, School of Medicine, joined a Select Subcommittee hearing on the impact of Coronavirus misinformation on the nation\u2019s public health in Washington D.C. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Representative James E. Clyburn, Chairman of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, held the hybrid remote\/in-person hearing examining the harm caused by the spread and monetization of coronavirus misinformation online.\u00a0 The hearing also considered actions needed to curtail this danger while promoting the dissemination of scientifically accurate public health information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300\">As noted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/select-subcommittee-hold-hearing-impact-coronavirus-misinformation-nation-s\">sub committee&#8217;s press release<\/a> &#8220;Misinformation endangers public health and fuels vaccine hesitancy by sowing distrust in safe and effective coronavirus vaccines and promoting the false notion that alternative drugs can prevent or cure coronavirus infections. \u00a0Exploiting falsehoods for financial gain puts American lives at risk and sets back our nation\u2019s progress in combating the coronavirus. \u00a0While the Biden Administration has invested federal resources to fight coronavirus misinformation and called for greater accountability, increased efforts may be necessary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300\">Witnesses (listed below) discussed the harm to Americans caused by coronavirus misinformation every day, current trends in online misinformation and how it is impairing the pandemic response, and what actions lawmakers should consider to stop the spread of misinformation and protect the lives it is endangering.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><strong>Dr. Kolina Koltai, <\/strong><\/b>Postdoctoral Fellow, Center for an Informed Public, University of Washington Information School<\/li>\n<li><b><strong>Dr. Jay Kennedy, <\/strong><\/b>Assistant Professor, School of Criminal Justice, Assistant Director of Research, Center for Anti-Counterfeiting and Product Protection, Michigan State University<\/li>\n<li><b><strong>Dr. Jeffrey Aeschlimann, <\/strong><\/b>Associate Professor, School of Pharmacy, Adjunct Associate Professor, School of Medicine, University of Connecticut (UConn)<\/li>\n<li><b><strong>Mar\u00eda Teresa Kumar, <\/strong><\/b>President and Chief Executive Officer, Voto Latino<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230; many individuals have spent hundreds of dollars and have put their health in jeopardy using unproven therapies over proven-effective therapies. Effective vaccines and therapies would have lowered their risks of developing severe COVID-19 infections, prevented unnecessary and costly hospitalizations, and even prevented COVID infection deaths.&#8221; \u00a0&#8211; Jeffrey Aeschlimann, Pharm.D.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Please view the proceedings below.
