In fact, she first heard them as a student at UConn.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt was a big turning point in my life,\u201d says Sanclemente. \u201cBreaking that wall [and saying] \u2018I&#8217;m unapologetically Nicole Sanclemente.\u2019 And I will be in any space I&#8217;m in.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The eldest daughter of Colombian immigrants, Sanclemente recalls many moments of trying to find herself \u201cpersonally, professionally, and academically\u201d in college \u2014 and walking into spaces where she felt she didn\u2019t belong.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But with guidance from what Sanclemente calls a \u2018village of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mentors,\u2019 she slowly began to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> embrace her accomplishments.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMentorship is the foundation of success,\u201d she says. &#8220;My mentors helped me get through the most monumental moments of my life, good and bad.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s the reason she decided to join the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clas.uconn.edu\/womens-leadership-collective\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Women\u2019s Leadership Collective.<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Each year, the program places <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">20 to 30 undergraduate students into small \u2018mentorship circles\u2019 with alumnae based on their career interests. They meet throughout the semester to identify career and life goals, develop leadership skills, and discuss issues that affect women in the workplace and society.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Mentoring is so vital to success in academia, for students and faculty alike,\u201d says Juli Wade, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, who spearheaded the program in 2020. \u201cIt\u2019s important to me to provide programs like this where students can see possibilities for their future through someone who\u2019s walked in similar shoes.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Elyssa Kelly, CLAS Senior Director of Alumni Relations, has led the Women&#8217;s Leadership Collective for its first two years. She says the program is a meaningful way to connect with alumnae who may not have been significantly engaged with the university since they graduated.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;As I recruit mentors, almost every alumna says &#8216;Wow, I wish this program existed when I went to UConn,\u201d says Kelly. \u201cThere is so much solidarity the alumnae share with the students around building confidence and navigating the vast career choices in liberal arts and sciences, as well as finding their voice as leaders.&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alumnae in the program range from the Class of 1976 to the Class of 2019. About half of the mentors are women of color.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe have multiple intersecting identities that are already disregarded by our society,\u201d says Sanclemente. \u201cIt genuinely feels good to know that someone in your corner is rooting for you.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It genuinely feels good to know that someone in your corner is rooting for you.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Now the Policy and Program Coordinator for the Connecticut Women&#8217;s Education and Legal Fund (CWEALF), Sanclemente advocates for bills that are centered on women&#8217;s economic security in the state. She also leads a training program for previous legal education clients who are interested in becoming community advocates.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and fellow alumna Liz Gustafson \u201917 MSW serve as mentors to undergraduate students Geraldine Uribe \u201923 (CLAS) and Sofia Saul \u201922 (CLAS).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt helps me to know that no matter what, I have someone to pick me up when I fall,\u201d says Uribe, a double-major in political science and urban and community studies. \u201cWe celebrate every small win.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Uribe quickly noticed the similarities between herself and Sanclemente. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They\u2019re both Latina. They\u2019re both first-generation students. They both share the same major. And they both want to make the world a better place.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe struggles and obstacles that we have had to endure, especially in college, are very similar,\u201d Uribe says. &#8220;[She] sees me in a way that I never saw myself.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reflecting on Sanclemente\u2019s empathy and leadership, Uribe nominated her for the program\u2019s Outstanding Alumnae Mentor Award, which she received at an on-campus celebration in April. It was the first time the group had met in-person <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014 more than six months after their initial introduction.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe&#8217;ve created such a bond and connection through the Brady Bunch of Zoom,\u201d Sanclemente says. \u201cBut to be able to be present and feel all those genuine emotions [in-person] is special. It\u2019s a mutually beneficial relationship.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Uribe hopes to pursue a career in political campaign management or work with a nonprofit. And she\u2019s sure of one thing: mentorship has changed her life for the better.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI know they&#8217;re going to be mentors for life,\u201d she says. \u201cI think that&#8217;s the best thing that I could have gotten out of it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Her advice for other UConn students?
