Her books, peer-reviewed articles, and chapters have been published worldwide, including in translation. She currently serves on the executive committee for the International Sociological Association, an organization with members from 126 countries.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBandana has the experience, institutional knowledge, and creativity to understand and build on the College\u2019s strengths in social sciences research and teaching,\u201d says Juli Wade, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. \u201cShe is well positioned to advance the work we do with UConn\u2019s regional campuses, and build connections with communities across Connecticut, helping to fulfill our mission as a land-grant university. I am excited to have her join our office.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Purkayastha has held several leadership positions, including head of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sociology.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Department of Sociology<\/span><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">from 2011 to 2016 and president of the Sociologists for Women in Society in 2013. She has also been recognized with two career awards from the American Sociological Association: the Contribution to the Field Award for her work on Asian and Asian Americans and the Jessie Bernard Award, which recognizes significant contributions to improving the lives of women.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIn this position, I\u2019ll get to work across departments with colleagues whom I may have collaborated on small things, but this will be at the policy level,\u201d Purkayastha says. \u201cIt\u2019s important to make sure that both the policies and practices are lining up with what we are hoping to achieve.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some of her initial goals include promoting interdisciplinarity and diversity across the social sciences and showcasing the College\u2019s important accomplishments in Connecticut \u2014 and beyond.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen I first started at UConn, I had a half-time appointment at the regional campuses,\u201d she explains. \u201cI knew all the exciting things that happened there. I&#8217;m really looking forward to making those consistently visible.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That includes highlighting student projects and the tangible impact they\u2019re having in their communities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere are multiple students in departments who are working all across the state,\u201d says Purkayastha, who has served as an advisor or associate advisor to more than 60 Ph.D. and MA graduates. \u201cOne colleague and her students set up a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2022\/04\/pop-up-food-pantry-at-uconn-stamford-aims-to-curb-food-insecurity\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">food pantry in Stamford<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
