{"id":19039,"date":"2014-08-28T14:52:45","date_gmt":"2014-08-28T14:52:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/?p=19039"},"modified":"2025-01-28T21:57:46","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T02:57:46","slug":"center-for-energy-innovation-marks-its-first-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2014\/08\/center-for-energy-innovation-marks-its-first-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Center for Energy Innovation Marks Its First Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">One year after the Fraunhofer Center for Energy Innovation at UConn was established,\u00a0it has progressed steadily toward its goal of advancing technologies related to energy storage, fuel cells, power management and distribution.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18803\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18803\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/PrabhakarSinghFuelCell1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18803 size-thumbnail img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/PrabhakarSinghFuelCell1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"PrabhakarSinghFuelCell[1]\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18803\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prabhakar Singh, director of CEI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">One of just seven Fraunhofer research centers in the country, the center is the result of a partnership between UConn, Fraunhofer USA, and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">\u201cCEI currently has active\u00a0research in the areas of glasses, battery storage, and adsorbents,\u201d said Prabhakar Singh, director of the Center. \u201cCEI is also collaborating with an industry partner in the area of developing technical solutions for liquid filtration by ceramic membranes in the U.S., and a pilot filtration plant will soon be installed on CEI premises for client interaction, academic and industrial research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">Singh, who is also a professor of materials science and engineering, said goals for the future include collaborating with state and federal agencies and private industry to advance the application of emerging technologies through research in areas related to energy storage, fuel cells, in-stream hydro, power management and distribution through contract research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">CEI, located on UConn\u2019s Depot Campus, recently marked its first anniversary with a workshop that brought together technical experts, state and federal officials and the private sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">The workshop provided presentations on the research findings of major projects being conducted at CEI in the field of clean and efficient energy conversion and storage systems, ceramic membranes and bio-fuel cleanup technologies.
