The day-long event brought together the <a href=\"https:\/\/cahnr.uconn.edu\/\">College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources<\/a> (CAHNR), the <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.uconn.edu\/\">School of Pharmacy<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.uconn.edu\/\">School of Medicine<\/a> for research presentations, a poster session, and networking opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium centered on the latest research in kidney and liver health, including discussion on the role obesity and aging play in the function of these organs and exploring possible treatments and interventions to improve health outcomes. She is also a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/immuno-cardio-group\/\">Immuno-Cardio Group<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/\">UConn Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first joint symposium of the group was held in 2019. Reconvening for this second gathering was long delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through an in-person event, researchers from different fields shared their latest work and sought new avenues of collaboration in both research and industry.<\/p>\n<p>Special guest Roger Newton \u201974 MS, \u201905 (HON), co-founder, president and chief executive officer of Espervita Therapeutics joined the symposium as well. Newton, who earned his master\u2019s degree focusing on the regulation of lipid\/cholesterol metabolism and was awarded an honorary degree in 2005, has advocated for this type of interdisciplinary health research at UConn for many years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something I\u2019ve been waiting for,\u201d says Newton. \u201cWe\u2019re getting together here at UConn to work in an integrated way. I\u2019m a nutritional biochemist, and this event gets everyone talking to different people with unique specialties in pharmaceuticals, nephrology, etc. to learn. It\u2019s wonderful to get everyone in one place at one time. There\u2019s going to be a lot of discussion about who we are, what we\u2019re doing, and where we\u2019re going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newton and his wife, Coco, have supported a number of projects in the Department of Nutritional Sciences over the years through the Esperance Family Foundation, including establishing a fellowship for a joint MD\/Ph.D. program that connected CAHNR and UConn\u2019s School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Newton delivered opening remarks along with CAHNR Dean Indrajeet Chaubey, School of Pharmacy Dean Philip Hritcko, and Interim Vice President for Research, Innovation and \u00a0Entrepreneurship Pamir Alpay. They shared Newton\u2019s enthusiasm for the potential collaborations the symposium could bring to UConn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe symposium was not just about that day,\u201d says Chaubey. \u201cIt serves as a catalyst that goes to the core of the land grant mission of UConn.
