You just need\u00a0to have played the game \u201cOperation.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you\u2019re familiar with the art of extracting tiny foreign bodies from the small, sensor-lined cavities of the board game, you\u2019re more or less familiar with IONM. The difference is the stakes. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">IONM involves working with a surgical team to ensure that a patient retains nerve function before, during, and after a surgery. Nerves transmit electrical signals from the brain and spinal cord all throughout the body, playing a role in virtually all bodily functions, so minimizing nerve damage during operations is imperative.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf a surgeon is working around the spinal cord and its nerve roots, we are helping the surgeon avoid injuring any of these structures by providing live, real-time feedback through neural signals we record,\u201d explains Dr. Payam Andalib, clinical director and faculty at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ionm.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UConn\u2019s IONM program<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cIf the surgeon gets too close to a nerve root and there is an irritation of that nerve, we are going to observe that as part of our monitoring and alert them so they can take appropriate action.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While IONM offers a rewarding and well-paying career path in healthcare, academic programs focusing on it are scarce. Andalib and Dr. Radmila Filipovic, the academic director for the program, set out to fill that void, noting that the current landscape resembles \u201cnursing in the mid- to late 1800s.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cInterested candidates would go to a hospital and express interest in the nursing profession and the hospital would train them on the job to become nurses. It took a few decades for nursing to have the first academic programs,\u201d Andalib says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Likewise, training in the IONM field today is mainly carried out on-the-job. But this model poses a couple of challenges, according to Andalib. First, it does not allow for the kind of thorough candidate vetting and dedicated training that can take place in an academic environment. Second, it leaves training non-uniform and non-standardized across companies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Creating Something from Nothing<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Enter UConn\u2019s IONM program\u2014the first of its kind in the nation. Filipovic and Andalib worked together to \u201ccreate something from nothing,\u201d according to Andalib.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They began with a summer graduate certification course that prepared students with nine credits of coursework and hands-on experience with the software used in operating rooms. Met with keen interest (and a $100,000 grant from the university), they expanded to offer a one-year master\u2019s degree that pairs this background work with clinical rotations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This unique program attracts students from across the country seeking a specialized field of healthcare study. Students\u2019 backgrounds are diverse, says\u00a0Filipovic. Learn more on the <a href=\"https:\/\/ionm.uconn.edu\/\">IONM website<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Intensive Attention to Students<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">About 15 to 20 students comprise each yearly IONM Master\u2019s cohort, which Filipovic describes as \u201ca big family.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt enables us to really focus on our students and give them our full attention,\u201d she adds. \u201cThe majority of our students are 20-30 years old, but we also have a group of students who are 30-45 years old, who are coming back to get higher education and start a new career. We are very proud of the age, gender, and race diversity in our program.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over the course of the year, students in the program grow close and share setbacks and successes. The 32-credit span allows them room to take courses in other UConn departments, like psychology and nursing. By the time they graduate, they\u2019re often ready to leap into the workforce.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In fact, in the four years since its inception, the program has consistently boasted a 90-100% job placement of graduates. The remaining percentage have mostly entered medical school or other avenues to further their medical training, such as dental school.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhat I like about our program is that it is like a journey, helping the students to get from point A at the start of the program to point B at the end of the program, transforming them to a professional ready to work in the healthcare industry,\u201d Andalib says. \u201cA lot of the didactic material can be learned by reading a textbook; however, our goal is to provide students with a unique set of skills that can only be obtained by training under specific kinds of mentors and faculty with vast clinical experience.&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What started out as a passion project for Andalib and Filipovic has now elicited national recognition for filling a global gap in academic IONM training. Even in the early days of the IONM certificate program, the University Professionals and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) granted it the prestigious \u201cInnovative and Creative Programming Award\u201d; the master\u2019s degree track has been \u201crecognized by all the professional organizations in neuromonitoring,\u201d says Andalib.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These students are thriving when they are hired; they tend to succeed at a much higher rate than candidates without IONM academic education.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the future, with\u00a0continuous support from the current PNB Department Head Dr. Akiko Nishiyama, Filipovic and Andalib plan to expand the IONM master\u2019s program to include more course options and allow students to further customize their concentrations. But for now, they\u2019re enjoying being the first to formally tap into graduate study in this novel field \u2014 and the accompanying opportunities to springboard their students to success.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;It is not that we <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">think<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that we are doing a good job, it is that we are receiving this feedback from all the employers \u2014 I&#8217;m constantly being reached out to by different neuromonitoring companies, and they are seeking our graduates,\u201d Andalib says. \u201cThese students are thriving when they are hired; they tend to succeed at a much higher rate than candidates without IONM academic education.\u201d<\/span><span
