Kearns has dedicated his career to researching reading disabilities such as dyslexia. He is now sharing his expertise with the New York City Department of Education as a member of their Literacy Advisory Council.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/person\/devin-kearns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kearns<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who is an associate professor of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/specialed.education.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">special education<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> at UConn\u2019s Neag School of Education in the Department of Educational Psychology, and other experts in the field <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schools.nyc.gov\/literacycouncil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">were recently invited by the city\u2019s chancellor of public schools<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to help improve literacy instruction and shape the direction of literacy in New York City.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt is incredibly exciting to be working with the New York City Department of Education on this essential work,\u201d Kearns says. \u201cAssembling this board shows the strength of their commitment to research-based literacy instruction.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The advisory council meets once a month to coordinate literacy efforts, collect information on student and family experiences, recommend tactics for improving literacy, build awareness of new initiatives, and advise on the direction of current city initiatives. The <a href=\"https:\/\/cprl.law.columbia.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Public Research and Leadership<\/a> at Columbia University is a partner of the city\u2019s public schools and dedicates its work to expanding <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">access to high-quality education for all students, particularly those of color and from low-income households.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe are so lucky to have faculty like Dr. Kearns who are not only conducting cutting-edge research on effective practices for students with reading disabilities but are also committed to helping teachers and schools implement these evidence-based practices to best support all students,\u201d says Michael Coyne, professor and head of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/epsy.education.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Department of Educational Psychology<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u201cHis work with the advisory council<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> will have lasting and meaningful impacts on reading outcomes for students across New York City.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n  <p>\u201c<span data-contrast=\"auto\">The work of the New York City Department of Education leadership and their literacy team shows that a large public school system can make dramatic changes<\/span>.\u201d <cite> &#8212 Devin M. Kearns, associate professor<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kearns\u2019 work with the advisory council embodies the Neag School\u2019s guiding mission and values. All faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the Neag School aim to improve educational and social systems to be more effective, equitable, and just for all, and prioritize engaging with communities to meet their educational needs. Kearns\u2019 position on the advisory council will allow him to directly impact making literacy education equitable for all students in New York City.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kearns is a research scientist for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cber.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UConn\u2019s Center for Behavioral Education and Research<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/haskinslabs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Haskins Laboratories<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in New Haven, and an affiliated faculty member for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ibacs.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Connecticut Institute for Brain and Cognitive Sciences (IBACS)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chip.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UConn Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. His research is supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institutes of Health, among others. He has published research related to reading disabilities in <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Exceptional Children, Journal of Educational Psychology, Reading Research Quarterly<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scientific Studies of Reading<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. He has also published papers for teachers in <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">TEACHING Exceptional Children<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Reading Teacher<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kearns was a Learning Sciences Institute and Institute of Education Sciences fellow and recipient of Vanderbilt University\u2019s Robert Gaylord-Ross Award for Writing Excellence and the Neag School of Education\u2019s Early-Career Researcher of the Year Award. He is on the editorial board of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Journal of Educational Psychology<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and several other journals.
