{"id":193436,"date":"2022-12-19T07:30:27","date_gmt":"2022-12-19T12:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=193436"},"modified":"2023-01-02T09:25:53","modified_gmt":"2023-01-02T14:25:53","slug":"feel-your-best-self-kidscreen-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2022\/12\/feel-your-best-self-kidscreen-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Feel Your Best Self Collaborative Project Nominated for Kidscreen Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nico, CJ, and Mena may only be kids, and puppets to boot, but they and their creators were recently nominated for a 2023 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awards.kidscreen.com\/Nominees\/?year=2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kidscreen<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Award, which recognizes children\u2019s TV and digital media content.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The three puppets are the stars of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/feelyourbestself.collaboration.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Feel Your Best Self project,<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> spurred through partnership between UConn\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/csch.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Collaboratory on School and Child Health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (CSCH) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bimp.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. CSCH sits between UConn\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Neag School of Education<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chip.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, while the Ballard Institute is part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sfa.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">School of Fine Arts<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThese are like the Oscars for kid\u2019s programming,\u201d says Feel Your Best Self co-founder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/person\/sandra-chafouleas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sandra Chafouleas<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who is also a Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor in the Neag School\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/epsy.education.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Department of Educational Psychology<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cThis cross-disciplinary collaboration has resulted in a project that is more than we could have possibly imagined, with each person contributing their unique talents to result in a project that can truly bring joy to kids and their caregivers.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Feel Your Best Self began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to address the emotional challenges faced by schools, children, and their caregivers. The team brings together collective expertise in educational psychology and puppetry to teach simple emotion-focused coping strategies to calm yourself, catch your feelings, and connect with others. Over the past couple of years, the project evolved synergistically into the complete, free FYBS toolkit and its 12 educational strategies.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awards.kidscreen.com\/Home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kidscreen Award<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> winners will be announced at a ceremony on Feb. 14, 2023, in Miami. Given their comprehensive educational toolkit that features Nico, CJ, and Mena as they navigate everyday issues and work through big feelings, the Feel Your Best Self team is a finalist in the \u201cBest Web\/App Series\u2014Original\u201d category and was one of 550 entries considered from around the world.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Feel Your Best Self is led by co-founders Chafouleas and Emily Wicks, who is also manager of operations and collections at the Ballard Institute, and Neag School postdoctoral scholar Emily Iovino who coordinates implementation support for the research team.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n  <p>\u201c<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Working together and seeing it be adopted for use in schools has been the most amazing experience, so we are very excited regardless of the Kidscreen outcome<\/span>.\u201d <cite> &#8212 Emily Wicks, co-founder of Feel Your Best Self<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chafouleas and the CSCH team took the evidence in emotion-focused coping to develop simple, fun, kid-appropriate strategies. Then Wicks put the work in motion to develop characters, video scripts, and the Feel Your Best Self world by connecting a team of Puppet Arts students and alumni. Among the many key players were Sarah Nolen \u201916 SFA, John Cody \u201917 SFA, Yanniv Frank \u201923 SFA, and Heather Asch \u201990 SFA. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It&#8217;s such an honor to be nominated alongside productions coming out of the Canadian Children\u2019s Block (CBC) and Peacock Kids,\u201d says Nolen, who served as the creative force in many roles such as director, creative director, producer, and more.\u00a0\u201cI think this project showcases an impressive amount of alumni talent and proves what an incredible network we have access to through UConn.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to the short videos of Nico, CJ, and Mena demonstrating each of the 12 emotion-focused coping strategies, the FYBS toolkit features: strategy cards with simple words\/pictures showing the steps in each strategy, reflection sheets so kids can journal about how the strategy worked for them, a facilitator guide for educators, and a guide to puppet-making to allow kids to create their own characters. The toolkit has been piloted in local elementary classrooms, and most recently has garnered attention from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/11\/11\/1135217910\/social-emotional-learning-puppets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">national media<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for its implementation in Natchaug Elementary in Windham.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While FYBS was originally created for use in classrooms, educators and community providers can adapt its free tools for use in small groups or with individual students.
