Paul Singer, General Manager of Technology for GE\u2019s Industrial Solutions, and Matt Dougherty, Technology Leader for Industrial Solution\u2019s Power Components business, spoke to the students and answered their questions about working in the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">The students were then given tours of the New Product Introduction Accelerator Lab and Advanced Manufacturing Lab. Kan Fu, a UConn research assistant and 2014 Fellow, called the visit <em>\u201c<\/em>an eye-opening experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">\u201cIt was very educational to see how engineers at GE go through the cycles of design &#8211;\u00a0test, evaluate, redesign and retesting &#8211; which is the essential process\u00a0for making a successful product,\u201d he said. \u201cThings that appear simple, such as a circuit breaker, carry a lot of intellectual development and persistence\u00a0that many people do not appreciate fully.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">Jian Ren, another Fellow, said it\u2019s important to see their studies put to real-world use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">\u201cWe&#8217;ve clearly seen the difference between industry and academia,\u201d he said. \u201cThis helps a lot for our career planning and development.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2012\/10\/ge-collaborates-with-uconn-on-7-5-million-advanced-technology-initiative\/\">GE Fellowship for Innovation <\/a>program was established in 2012 as part of the company\u2019s $7.5 million technology initiative.
