Just as many educators were contemplating leaving the field due to the hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW182487002 BCX0\">Ja<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW182487002 BCX0\">r<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW182487002 BCX0\">a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW182487002 BCX0\">m<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW182487002 BCX0\">illo<\/span> decided to become a teacher and enrolled at the Neag School of Education.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThough the finance life has its perks for some people, I quickly learned it wasn\u2019t for me,\u201d she says. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t until I began tutoring during the pandemic that I discovered my love for teaching.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unfortunately, there aren\u2019t enough people like <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW182487002 BCX0\">Ja<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW182487002 BCX0\">r<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW182487002 BCX0\">a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW182487002 BCX0\">m<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW182487002 BCX0\">illo,<\/span> and schools across Connecticut and the nation are struggling to find teachers to meet the needs of their students. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cga.ct.gov\/2022\/rpt\/pdf\/2022-R-0273.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">a recent report<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> published by the Connecticut Department of Education, the state had <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1,221 teaching vacancies and another 1,322 paraprofessional vacancies going into the 2022-2023 school year. The data was collected through an August 2022 staffing survey of all school districts and approved private special education providers in Connecticut.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/schoolsurvey\/spp\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">national survey<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> conducted by the U.S. Department of Education\u2019s Institute of Education Sciences in October also found that 48% of schools in the Northeast felt their school is understaffed and 53% reported not being able to fill vacant teaching positions since the start of COVID-19.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere is no denying that it is a stressful time to be an educator, whether in the classroom or an administration office,\u201d says Neag School Dean Jason G. Irizarry. \u201cYet, we are starting to see encouraging trends in enrollment and interest in our programs at the Neag School which will have a positive impact in schools across the state and nation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Not only has the Neag School boosted enrollment in its teacher education programs, but it also recently expanded its programmatic offerings to train more educators and support Connecticut&#8217;s schools.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Teacher Education Programs Increase Enrollment<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Total student enrollment in the Neag School\u2019s Teacher Certification Program for College Graduates (TCPCG) has returned to pre-pandemic levels \u2013 in fact it has increased by about 3% from 2017 to 2022 \u2013 and the total number of students of color who are enrolled in that program has increased 111% over the same time period. The 11-month, full-time program is designed for students who already hold a bachelor\u2019s degree and wish to earn their teacher certification in a specific subject area. It operates out of UConn\u2019s four regional campuses: Avery Point, Hartford, Stamford, and Waterbury.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Neag School\u2019s Integrated Bachelor\u2019s\/Master\u2019s Teacher Education Program has also seen increases in both the total number of admitted students (up 12.4%) and the number of admitted students of color (up 33%) since 2017. There was a slight dip in new first-gen students in 2020-2021, but their enrollment has since recovered and surpassed pre-pandemic levels. Graduates are awarded the Sixth-Year Diploma and are eligible for certification endorsement as an Intermediate Administrator in the state of Connecticut.
