For a variety of reasons, she explains, emerging adults don\u2019t respond as well as older individuals to traditional opioid use disorder (OUD) treatments. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nonetheless, they comprise \u201cthe group that\u2019s been arguably the hardest hit by the opioid epidemic.\u201d And with fentanyl\u2019s increasing prevalence in the opioid supply, young people with OUD are increasingly at a greater risk for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2019\/10\/connecticut-drug-overdoses-doubled-six-years\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">overdosing<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a trend researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2021\/12\/connecticut-urges-other-states-to-adapt-rapid-opioid-overdose-surveillance\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">don\u2019t foresee reversing<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> anytime soon.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Residential and outpatient treatment programs for emerging adults in recovery have proliferated in recent years \u2013 including collegiate programs like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2022\/10\/no-one-is-expecting-you-to-be-perfect\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Recovery Community Center.<\/span><\/a><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThey [recovery programs] are kind of spreading like wildfire,\u201d Zajac says. \u201cAnd we think that is great, because we know that they&#8217;re helpful. But there&#8217;s been almost no research done on them. So, the NIH wants questions answered like, which of these services are the most helpful? For whom are they helpful? Under what conditions are they helpful? And how do we get them out into communities?\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Zajac\u2019s latest research project, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reporter.nih.gov\/project-details\/10589466\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Collaborative Hub for Emerging Adult Recovery Research<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (CHEARR), is a cross-organizational, boundary-breaking collaboration geared toward improving outcomes for young adults in treatment for OUD. Funded by a nearly $2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/heal.nih.gov\/about\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Helping to End Addiction Long-Term<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (HEAL) Initiative, CHEARR is filling a gap in existing opioid recovery research by focusing on the efficacy of specific support services for young adults. By studying the outcomes associated with these services, researchers will be able to develop a new set of standards for young adult recovery programs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen you meet with a really young person who has had their whole life torn apart because of addictions, you just want to help fix the problem.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">First up for Zajac\u2019s team will be forming two community boards that will advise and guide researchers throughout the initiative. One board will be made up of young adults with lived experience in recovery from OUD; the other will comprise recovery coaches who have worked with emerging adult populations with OUD. The project will encompass a variety of initiatives to stimulate further research in recovery support, as well as opportunities to synthesize existing research in the subfield through national conferences and other forms of research networking.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to have a student internship \u2013 hopefully we\u2019ll have a lot of UConn undergraduate students in that \u2013 and we\u2019re also going to have a postdoctoral fellowship,\u201d Zajac says. \u201cAnd for both of those, we\u2019re going to be trying to choose applicants who have lived experience of their own in recovery, or with familial substance use problems, so that they have their own personal experience to pull from.
