{"id":197817,"date":"2023-04-20T10:03:34","date_gmt":"2023-04-20T14:03:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=197817"},"modified":"2024-01-04T15:42:08","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T20:42:08","slug":"research-ready-preparing-students-for-life-after-uconn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2023\/04\/research-ready-preparing-students-for-life-after-uconn\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Ready: Preparing Students for Life After UConn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">By her junior year, Kelly Ruesta \u201924 (CLAS) had discovered what she wanted to study, found a sense of belonging in campus cultural centers, and used her voice to advocate for underrepresented students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">But somehow, it didn\u2019t feel like enough.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThere was an expectation that I should already have done research,\u201d explains Ruesta, who is pursuing an individualized major in health disparities among marginalized groups. \u201cEspecially [because I was] hearing my peers talk about their own experiences and labs.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">She says the number of resources available was frankly \u201coverwhelming,\u201d and as a first-generation student, she didn\u2019t know where to begin.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI was not familiar with the process of asking or advocating for myself in order to be in spaces where research opportunities were provided,\u201d Ruesta says.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">But with the help of one of several programs that connect CLAS students from marginalized backgrounds with mentors who can prepare them for life after UConn, that quickly changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ruesta was selected to participate in the pilot Research MASTER (Mentoring and Scholarship Training for Emerging Researchers) program in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/anthropology.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Department of Anthropology<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. The new initiative, created by the department\u2019s Equity and Inclusion Committee with support from a CLAS DEI Initiative grant, provides guided access to research experiences for undergraduates from underrepresented groups. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">By being paired with graduate students, undergraduates are given an opportunity to work as apprentices on doctoral projects, which fosters deeper engagement with research while elevating transferable skills in critical thinking, communication, problem solving, and time management. Ruesta, who is from Peru, says she\u2019s had many mentors in her life \u2014 both in her culture and academics \u2014 but this was the first one that focused on her future career.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cJoining this program, I have had the support of a graduate student throughout the research process,\u201d she says. \u201cShe has taken the initiative and space to support me in my current interests and challenge me to think beyond college.\u201d <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I have had the support of a graduate student throughout the research process.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cMany students don&#8217;t know that they can ask, don&#8217;t feel comfortable asking, or don&#8217;t feel like they&#8217;re at a point where they know what questions to ask if they&#8217;re potentially interested in pursuing graduate studies,\u201d says Eiling Yee, associate professor of psychological sciences.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Yee leads the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/magic.initiative.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mentoring Aspiring Graduate students and Building an Inclusive Community (MAGIC) program<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, which aims to help first-generation students get into and succeed in graduate school.\u00a0 MAGIC features a network of more than 90 faculty and graduate student mentors in the fields of psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, linguistics, and speech, language, and hearing sciences. Mentors provide mentees with advice on topics such as choosing a program, CVs, personal statements, and funding graduate school.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c[We\u2019re] getting students to think about it early on,\u201d says Crystal Mills, coordinator for the Institute for the Brain and Cognitive Sciences (IBACS), who helps facilitate the program. \u201cI think a lot of them can miss out on opportunities to join labs and get that experience earlier.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Yee says there\u2019s also an added benefit: exposing faculty more personally to students from different backgrounds. In the last cycle, 45 percent of the mentees identified as first-generation, 75 percent as nonwhite, and 22 percent as having a disability.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cSome faculty might not understand that it&#8217;s a really big deal to apply to graduate school \u2014 75 dollars times four is a burden,\u201d she explains, referring to graduate school application fees. \u201cSo, they\u2019re hearing and getting that firsthand knowledge from the students.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Faculty in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geography.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Department of Geography<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> are also opening doors for underrepresented students interested in STEM fields, specifically geographic information science (GIS).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Audrey Berry \u201924 (CLAS) was one of the first recipients of a College-funded diversity grant in the department, where students receive training and research experience from a faculty member.
