I wanted to have access to resources such as faculty and research labs that focused on the life sciences and biology. I also really liked that it was a large, public university. Being in such a large community, I had the chance to join various small subgroups, which allowed me to explore my different interests.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What drew you to your field of study?\u202f<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In middle school, I became fascinated by the life sciences, specifically human biology. What drew me into molecular and cell biology was taking a genetics class (MCB 2410) as a sophomore<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mcb.uconn.edu\/person\/mark-longo\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mark Longo<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This course gave me a deep appreciation for how mutations and cellular mechanisms impact underlying hereditary conditions like cancer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Did you have a favorite professor or class?\u202f<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"><br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pnb.uconn.edu\/person\/john\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">John Redden<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, my human anatomy and physiology (PNB 2264\/2265) professor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, was my favorite professor at UConn. He brings enthusiasm and vigor to each lecture and seems to genuinely care about students\u2019 understanding and real-life application of the course material. I also love his dedication and creativity for Halloween costumes! His Ash Ketchum costume from Pok\u00e9mon with his adorable dog dressed as Pikachu will forever be memorable.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What activities were you involved in as a student?\u202f<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I have been involved in the Women in Math, Science, and Engineering (WiMSE) learning community, Learning Community Talks 2020: Delving into Diversity, the Nubian dance team, West Indian Student Organization (WISO), McNair Scholars, as well as working within research in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pnb.uconn.edu\/person\/anastasios\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Anastasios Tzingounis<\/span><\/a><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> lab in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pnb.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Department of Physiology and Neurobiology<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I was the social affairs chair of the Learning Community Council and a UConn first year mentor.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What\u2019s one thing that surprised you about UConn?\u202f<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UConn surprised me with the vast academic and scholarship opportunities for underrepresented students. As a first-generation student, woman of color, with a Caribbean background, and child of immigrants, I have had to deal with constant imposter syndrome, especially in a predominantly white institution like UConn. However, I have been very fortunate to have access to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/firstgen.uconn.edu\/first-gen-honor-society\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UConn First Generation Society<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, WiMSE learning community, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/career.uconn.edu\/organizations\/mcnair-scholars-program\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">McNair Scholars program<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. All these curated spaces have advanced my confidence in professional settings in the STEM field and have molded me into a more competitive candidate for future career opportunities.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How has UConn prepared you for the next chapter in life?\u202f<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UConn has given me an immense number of valuable connections and networks that have prepared me for the next chapter in life. Mentors from first year programs such as program coordinator <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fyp.uconn.edu\/person\/helena-debald\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Helena DeBald<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> helping to coach me at LC talks, working with me as a first-year mentor and ultimately igniting my curiosity for research by helping to execute the UConn research connections event. I have also been fortunate to have mentors such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caps.center.uconn.edu\/person\/renee-trueman-ph-d\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ren\u00e9e Trueman<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the McNair program coordinator, and my PI, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pnb.uconn.edu\/person\/anastasios\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nastasios Tzingouni<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><\/a><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> who have given me their full support, guidance into becoming a competitive PA c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">andidate, and recommendations for academic programs. I can\u2019t emphasize enough how essential the friends you make at this institution will impact your feeling of belonging, and success at UConn. It is such an exhilarating and fun experience. Being a CLAS student gave me invaluable insight into a broad range of innovative thinking and unique ideas.
