{"id":198756,"date":"2023-05-09T12:01:59","date_gmt":"2023-05-09T16:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=198756"},"modified":"2023-05-09T10:07:56","modified_gmt":"2023-05-09T14:07:56","slug":"laura-curran-named-as-next-dean-of-uconn-school-of-social-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2023\/05\/laura-curran-named-as-next-dean-of-uconn-school-of-social-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Laura Curran Named as Next Dean of UConn School of Social Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Laura Curran, Ph.D., a highly regarded social work educator and researcher, has been selected as the 15th dean of the UConn School of Social Work.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Curran currently is the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Prior to serving as Vice Provost, Dr. Curran held the position of Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the Rutgers University School of Social Work.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_198769\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-198769\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-198769 size-medium img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/JA22ViceProvostLauraCurran04-1-002-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"Laura Curran\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/JA22ViceProvostLauraCurran04-1-002-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/JA22ViceProvostLauraCurran04-1-002.jpg 230w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 224px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 224\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-198769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Laura Curran (contributed photo).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She starts her new role as UConn School of Social Work dean on August 11.<\/p>\n<p>Anne D\u2019Alleva, UConn\u2019s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, announced Curran\u2019s appointment in a letter today to the school\u2019s faculty, staff, and students, noting she was a top choice from an \u201cexceptionally talented pool of applicants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Curran demonstrates a clear understanding of the mission of our School of Social Work, with a commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and the improvement of human well-being, both locally and globally,\u201d D\u2019Alleva says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has led several DEI initiatives and has a record of interdisciplinary collaboration and understands the demands of research and faculty advancement. She is also a strong supporter of students, serving as a mentor for supervised research assistantships for social work graduate students over the last two decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her role as Vice Provost, Dr. Curran was responsible for strategic initiatives that support faculty leadership, mentoring, recruitment, and retention as well as directing the Center for Faculty Success.<\/p>\n<p>She served as a key member of multiple high-level strategic planning initiatives including the Academic Master Plan, which encompassed initiatives addressing student, faculty, and staff well-being as well as inclusive pedagogy and teaching excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Curran\u2019s scholarship focuses on three main areas: social work and social welfare history; women\u2019s perinatal health and well-being; and social work education. Her work has received funding from the New Jersey, Department of Health, the New York Community Trust, and the Association of Social Work Boards, among other entities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am incredibly honored and humbled to join the UConn community and lead the deeply talented faculty, staff, and students at the UConn School of Social Work,\u201d says Curran. \u201cI hope to build on the School\u2019s incredibly strong foundation, work in close collaboration with our state and community partners, further enhance our research portfolio and educational programs, and advance the school\u2019s social justice mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Curran will succeed Nina Rovinelli Heller, who plans to return to the faculty after eight years as the school\u2019s dean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am delighted to welcome Dr. Curran to our UConn SSW community,\u201d says Dr. Heller. \u201cShe brings a strong and demonstrated commitment to social work education and research, faculty development, and student mentoring. This background, and prior work in the Rutgers\u2019 Provost Office, position her well to work closely with colleagues across the university, our community partners, and to advance the national profile of the school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Curran earned her B.A. from Barnard College, an M.S.W. from Columbia University, and her PhD from UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to entering academia, Dr. Curran practiced as a social worker in the areas of community mental health and child welfare.
