The vision was simple: to equip kids and their caregivers with coping skills for \u201cthings that feel yucky,\u201d says Sandra M. Chafouleas, FYBS\u2019s cofounder and Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of educational psychology.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now, thanks to a new partnership with The WNET Group, home of New York\u2019s THIRTEEN \u2014 America&#8217;s flagship PBS station \u2014 more kids around the world will be able to engage with FYBS. THIRTEEN PBS has added FYBS video content to its weekday program <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/show\/lets-learn-nyc\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Let\u2019s Learn<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a series for kids ages 3-7 dedicated to making learning fun. The episodes featuring FYBS will begin airing on television in early June and are currently live on the Let\u2019s Learn website, free for parents, daycare providers, and educators to stream at any time.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FYBS was born from a need for simple and accessible supplements to support social and emotional skills \u2014 a need which the COVID-19 pandemic laid bare. So, our team was also asking ourselves, what is the emotional toll?\u201d Chafouleas says. \u201cWe had a youth mental health problem before the pandemic, but it was kind of like opening Pandora&#8217;s box on what was being experienced. Emily Wicks, FYBS cofounder and manager of operations and collections at the Ballard Institute, helped harness the talent of puppetry arts students and alumni to bring the FYBS vision to reality.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the FYBS toolkit (which is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/feelyourbestself.collaboration.uconn.edu\/toolkit\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">available for free online<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), the friendly puppets give life to emotion coping techniques like belly breathing, mindfulness, and connecting with others. According to Wicks, the program has received web traffic from countries around the world, with the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Mexico comprising the largest audiences.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since the FYBS toolkit went live, the response has been overwhelming. The program was featured on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/transcripts\/1135217910\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NPR Morning Edition<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in November 2022; this year, the team took home a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2023\/02\/feel-your-best-self-wins-kidscreen-award\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kidscreen award<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for \u201cBest Web\/App Series\u2014Original\u201d and four honors in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tellyawards.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Telly Awards<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">More recently, FYBS was highlighted in a piece on Edutopia, a major resource and news hub for K-12 teachers owned and operated by the George Lucas Educational Foundation. The published content includes a video and accompanying article showcasing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/video\/express-emotions-puppets-elementary-students\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the FYBS curriculum in action<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, in the expert hands of educators at Natchaug Elementary School in Willimantic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen I first got here &#8230; there was a real focus on academic achievement, and on closing the gap, but there wasn\u2019t really a focus on social\/emotional wellness,\u201d says Eben Jones, the school\u2019s principal, in the Edutopia video. \u201cMany students in our community have experienced some kind of trauma, and I think everybody benefits from understanding this role that your own emotional intelligence can play in your ability to learn.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As FYBS continues to expand, the team is fine-tuning and adapting the program based on user feedback gathered by Emily Iovino, FYBS implementation coordinator.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The effort is a true cross-disciplinary collaboration at UConn, designed to captivate young minds and soothe big feelings. It takes \u201cmy world of the science of emotional regulation strategies,\u201d says Chafouleas, and \u201cmerges that with the world of puppetry to engage creativity and imaginations and interest.
