With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/media\/press-releases\/2023\/06\/21\/biden-harris-administration-announces-inaugural-learning-leading\">$4.5 million in funding<\/a> from the U.S. Department of Agriculture\u2019s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), the initiative will sponsor about 30 undergraduate student fellows in cohorts on both campuses. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The program\u2019s resources will include a robust scholarship portfolio; experiential learning opportunities such as paid internships and research placements; cultural, academic, research, and career development programs at both campuses; and professional networking opportunities for all fellows.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt gives students firsthand knowledge of what\u2019s required to have a career in those fields, and hopefully apply that classroom knowledge to real-life experiences,\u201d says the program\u2019s co-Principal Investigator (co-PI) and co-director Kristen Govoni, Associate Dean for Academic Programs in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cahnr.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CAHNR<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cThey will receive academic support, soft skills, and mentoring from peers, faculty, and staff. They will also have exposure to career opportunities within those fields.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of CAHNR&#8217;s key priorities is training the next generation of agriculture, health, and natural resources professionals. With approximately 20-30% of the federal workforce eligible for retirement in the coming years, according to Govoni, there is an urgent need for knowledgeable workers to launch careers in these fields.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Across all of its campuses, UConn is ideally positioned to create opportunities for students entering these disciplines, thanks to CAHNR\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cahnr.uconn.edu\/achievements\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">nationally renowned<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> academic programming and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cahnr.uconn.edu\/extension\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UConn Extension<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> network of community outreach initiatives. UConn Waterbury and UConn Stamford, both considered Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs), were prioritized for support as part of a broader effort to increase opportunities for Hispanic students and students of color. Ruffin. \u201cWaterbury Public Schools is always looking to bring innovative resources to our students. Application review will begin July 1, 2023, and continue until spots are full. Incoming first-year students at UConn Waterbury and UConn Stamford who have a major in CAHNR are eligible.
