{"id":200761,"date":"2019-09-09T13:57:09","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T17:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=200761"},"modified":"2023-06-27T14:06:12","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T18:06:12","slug":"series-expands-discussion-of-research-on-undocu-dacamented-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2019\/09\/series-expands-discussion-of-research-on-undocu-dacamented-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Series Expands Discussion of Research on Undocu\/DACAmented Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pg-26088-0\" class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\">\n<div id=\"pgc-26088-0-0\" class=\"panel-grid-cell\">\n<div id=\"panel-26088-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\">\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<p>This past academic year, UConn\u2019s Neag School of Education, along with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/undocuscholars.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UndocuScholars<\/a>\u00a0at the University of California Los Angeles and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashe.ws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Association for the Study of Higher Education<\/a>\u00a0(ASHE) Presidential Commission on Undocumented Immigrants, co-sponsored a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.undocuscholars.org\/latest-news\/2018\/8\/27\/research-brief-dissemination-series-undocuscholars-project-ashe-presidential-commission-on-undocumented-immigrants-and-university-of-connecticut-summary-of-research-brief-dissemination-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research brief dissemination series<\/a>\u00a0highlighting issues related to the undocu\/DACAmented community.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the series was to make research in this area accessible beyond traditional academic spaces, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/person\/h-kenny-nienhusser\/\">H. Kenny Nienhusser<\/a>, Neag School assistant professor of higher education and student affairs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pgc-26088-0-1\" class=\"panel-grid-cell\">\n<div id=\"panel-26088-0-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\">\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<div id=\"gallery-1\" class=\"gallery galleryid-26088 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail\"><\/div>\n<p><em>The Neag School, ASHE\u2019s Presidential Commission on Undocumented Immigrants, and UndocuScholars teamed up in 2018-19 to disseminate research on the undocu\/DACAmented community.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pg-26088-1\" class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\">\n<div id=\"pgc-26088-1-0\" class=\"panel-grid-cell\">\n<div id=\"panel-26088-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child\" data-index=\"2\">\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<blockquote><p>\u201cExamining issues that affect the undocu\/DACAmented community is urgent, given the pervasive discriminatory postsecondary education policy landscape and xenophobic climate that has besieged our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 H. Kenny Nienhusser,<br \/>\nAssistant Professor<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"panel-26088-1-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\">\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<p>\u201cExamining issues that affect the undocu\/DACAmented community is urgent, given the pervasive discriminatory postsecondary education policy landscape and xenophobic climate that has besieged our nation,\u201d says Nienhusser, who as co-chair of the ASHE Presidential Commission on Undocumented Immigrants, helped coordinate the series.<\/p>\n<p>The dissemination series, which featured four research briefs, each with a corresponding webinar or Twitter chat, \u201coffered a fantastic opportunity for UndocuScholars to partner with leading scholars to shed light on critical topics affecting the undocumented immigrant community,\u201d says Robert Teranishi, UndocuScholars co-principal investigator and professor of education at UCLA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nationwide Engagement<br \/>\n<\/strong>The series kicked off last October with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wke.lt\/w\/s\/sPJx3O\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter chat<\/a><u>,<\/u>facilitated by Nienhusser, focusing on his research brief titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/s.uconn.edu\/implement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Implementation of Public and Institutional Policies for Undocu and DACAmented Students at Higher Education Institutions<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26090\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26090\"><a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1621\/2019\/08\/Research-Brief-Series-2018-19.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26090 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1621\/2019\/08\/Research-Brief-Series-2018-19.jpg\" alt=\"2018-19 Research Brief Dissemination Series Flyer\" width=\"500\" height=\"647\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 500px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 500\/647;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26090\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Through social media and webinars, this 2018-19 series offered participants an opportunity to connect with and learn from scholars and practitioners dedicated to examining issues that affect undocumented and DACAmented students.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nienhusser, along with discussant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jjay.cuny.edu\/faculty\/isabel-martinez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isabel Martinez<\/a>\u00a0from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, led a conversation about the impact of different federal and state policies on undocu\/DACAmented students, as well as how these policies are implemented at the institutional level by administrators at colleges and universities. During the chat, Martinez discussed the initial \u201clack of awareness and knowledge about undoc\/DACA students on campus\u201d at her institution and shared some of the ways she and her colleagues have worked to change the campus culture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id=1oTxbstETNcFX07pSzcuqB3Te2XDp7x2D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hosting a Twitter chat on the topic<\/a>, Nienhusser says, \u201cwas a different way to infuse valuable information into educational professionals\u2019 understanding of issues that affect the [undoc\/DACAmented] community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second Twitter chat, which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id=1-Yk_0WxQU21tF811JvXrnyWFV-46xH-f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">took place this past February<\/a>, was hosted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usfca.edu\/faculty\/genevieve-negron-gonzales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genevieve Negr\u00f3n-Gonzales<\/a>\u00a0from the University of San Francisco and fellow discussants Leisette Rodriguez from California State University, Dominguez Hills, and Carolina Valdivia, a doctoral candidate at Harvard University.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wakelet.com\/wake\/f2ca62a3-21af-48cb-b98f-359cee441797\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The chat<\/a>, which unpacked Negr\u00f3n-Gonzales\u2019 brief titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5aa69fbe8f51307aa7d7cdcb\/t\/5c3e09eb898583ec9ba9754b\/1547569644701\/Genevieve+Negr%C3%B3n-Gonzales+UndocuScholars+Research+Brief.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deportation as an Educational Policy Issue: How We Can Fight Back and Why We Must<\/a>,\u201d dissected how deportation affects students and their families, and what can be and is being done on the individual and systemic levels to support and protect undocu\/DACAmented students from unjust separation, detention, and deportation.<\/p>\n<p>The series\u2019 two webinars, which together hosted well over 100 participants, kicked off in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aWL58LWDeaU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 2018<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chhs.colostate.edu\/bio-page?person=susana-munoz-2285\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Susana M. Mu\u00f1oz<\/a>\u00a0from Colorado State University exploring her research brief, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/s.uconn.edu\/communitycollege\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The \u2018Trump Effect\u2019 and Undocumented and DACA Community College Students<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id=1Y-y8U3bjFbfWX-XYWn3dKsteTEdHccoj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The webinar<\/a>\u00a0focused on the experiences of undocu\/DACAmented community college students in the era of the Trump administration\u2019s anti-immigrant policies and highlighted issues such as heightened white supremacy and uncertain academic trajectories, as well as how to create supportive spaces at community colleges.<\/p>\n<p>The final event in the series, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id=1B5-u0XZKHnP5SV_AVh3c9UZXcz8ldM0H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 2019 webinar<\/a>, was facilitated by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csulb.edu\/social-and-cultural-analysis-of-education\/page\/lindsay-perez-huber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lindsay P\u00e9rez Huber<\/a>\u00a0from Colorado State University, Long Beach, who discussed her brief \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/s.uconn.edu\/humanizing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moving Beyond Ethicality: Humanizing Research Methodologies with Immigrant and Undocumented Communities<\/a>.\u201d This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3cQLeAJf7EI&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">webinar<\/a>\u00a0focused on the heightened responsibility that researchers have when working with historically marginalized populations such as the undocu\/DACAmented community, and how to uphold and promote humanizing methods instead of those which could be destructive or exploitative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth the webinars and Twitter chats provided practitioners and researchers an opportunity to \u2018talk back\u2019 to the research briefs as they provided strategies for implications and applications for undocumented and DACA college students,\u201d says Mu\u00f1oz. \u201cIt was great to see nationwide engagement among hundreds of people who are invested in making higher education and research more humane for this population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Shedding Light on Education Policy\u2019<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cThe series did a terrific job of shedding light on education policy in the current climate, as it relates to such timely issues as immigration, deportation, and the experience of undocumented students in the higher education space,\u201d says Neag School Dean\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/person\/gladis-kersaint\/\">Gladis Kersaint<\/a>. \u201cIn particular, we were delighted to see web conferencing and social media serving as effective channels in engaging practitioners and students from far and wide in this meaningful, ongoing discussion.
