{"id":200927,"date":"2023-07-27T07:45:38","date_gmt":"2023-07-27T11:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=200927"},"modified":"2023-07-26T10:00:10","modified_gmt":"2023-07-26T14:00:10","slug":"uconn-connecticut-center-for-advanced-technology-sign-collaboration-memorandum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2023\/07\/uconn-connecticut-center-for-advanced-technology-sign-collaboration-memorandum\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn, Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology Sign Collaboration Memorandum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Representatives from the University of Connecticut and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccat.us\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">met to celebrate the ink drying on a new collaboration agreement \u2014 and to brainstorm potential joint projects \u2014 in UConn Tech Park\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techpark.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Innovation Partnership Building<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on June 28.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recognizing one another as two of the region\u2019s most significant powerhouses of technology development, UConn and CCAT signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for future collaboration in March 2023. The memorandum encourages open communication between the state\u2019s flagship research university and the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">applied technology demonstration and training center &#8212; <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with the intent of joining forces and aligning resources, wherever possible, to pursue valuable regional funding opportunities.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard for me to express the importance of this meeting,\u201d said Ron Angelo \u201885 (CLAS), a graduate of UConn\u2019s economics program who is now the president and CEO of CCAT and serves on the School of Engineering Advisory Board. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOur teams have worked together for many, many years on technical projects. We are well aligned on the most important issues facing our industrial base<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and this partnership will leverage our joint resources to drive maximum impact. It\u2019s tremendously valuable to me to be sitting in this room today.\u201d\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For nearly two decades, CCAT has been delivering transformative solutions to Connecticut manufacturing companies as a dynamic and innovative applied technology organization located in East Hartford, central to many of the state\u2019s manufacturing and technology hubs. This proximity allows CCAT \u2013 and now, by extension, UConn \u2013 to tap into Connecticut\u2019s manufacturing base in industries like aerospace engineering, shipbuilding, and medical device manufacturing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe timing around this partnership is in part due to the historic demand and need for technology advancement and talent generation and development,\u201d Angelo said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pamir Alpay, UConn\u2019s interim vice president for research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, noted that the two institutions complement one another: UConn is widely known for its technical research, and CCAT brings the capacity to create technical applications for that research.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere\u2019s synergistic opportunities we can explore together \u2014 manufacturing technologies, automation, robotics, and materials engineering will be at the forefront of what we will work on together,\u201d Alpay said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Two examples of active collaborative research include controlling manufacturing variability using physics-informed artificial intelligence, a CCAT collaboration with Professor George Bollas building upon <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cesmii.org\/energy-management-systems-for-subtractive-and-additive-precision-manufacturing\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">prior work<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) Smart Manufacturing Insitute <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cesmii.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CESMII<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; and edge cognitive data fusion in hybrid manufacturing processes, a CCAT collaboration with Assistant Professor Farhad Imani and Professor Jiong Tang. Future federally funded opportunities include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/oced\/regional-clean-hydrogen-hubs\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">DOE Regional Hydrogen Hubs,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eda.gov\/funding\/programs\/regional-technology-and-innovation-hubs\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">EDA Regional Technology &amp; Innovation Hubs<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/08\/09\/fact-sheet-chips-and-science-act-will-lower-costs-create-jobs-strengthen-supply-chains-and-counter-china\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CHIPS and Science Act.<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assistant Dean of the School of Engineering Kylene Perras noted that the MOU \u201callows opportunity for great creativity and innovation.\u201d With the combined resources of CCAT and UConn, she says, she looks forward to greater access for regional and federal funding opportunities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHarnessing the power of both CCAT and UConn, focused on technology and talent, we have a shared commitment of transforming companies, communities and career pathways,\u201d says CCAT\u2019s chief technology officer, Jackie Garofano \u201809 M.S., \u201811 Ph.D., who also serves on the external advisory board of UConn\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cmsc.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Connecticut Manufacturing Simulation Center (CMSC)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 In addition to providing manufacturing companies with technology adoption, CCAT supports employers with recruiting and upskilling of their talent.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the June 28 meeting, various UConn faculty presented projects that aligned with CCAT\u2019s goals and expertise. Emmanouil \u201cManos\u201d Anagnostou, interim executive director for the Innovation Partnership Building, expressed that UConn Tech Park is \u201cvery much looking forward to expanding our presence in clean energy and sustainability\u201d and will \u201cmake a very targeted effort to engage with small manufacturers, along with the big centers.\u201d Julia Valla, associate director of UConn\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Center for Clean Energy Engineering (C2E2)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, shared some of the Center\u2019s most exciting sustainability projects, like hydrogen research and an initiative that routes food waste into biochar production.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alpay reiterated that the partnership unlocks more opportunities to apply and commercialize the transformative innovations from UConn research.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s about translating what you are doing in R&amp;D [research and development] so you are actually transforming the socioeconomic structure of a region,\u201d Alpay said. \u201cSo it\u2019s not just R&amp;D \u2014 it\u2019s a whole lot broader.
