Seven outstanding Neag School graduates will be formally recognized at the School\u2019s 21st annual Alumni Awards Celebration on Saturday, March 16, 2019:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outstanding Early Career Professional \u2014\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Victoria M. Schilling\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>16 (ED), \u201917 MA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Victoria Schilling serves as an eighth-grade teacher at Ellington (Conn.) Middle School, where she has designed and implemented next-generation science standards units of instruction, and also serves as the cheerleading coach. She is a member of the UConn Mentor Teacher Collaborative Professional Learning Network, through which she has co-published multiple articles and presented at national and regional conferences. After graduation, Schilling also worked for the Neag School of Education, where she led a middle school curriculum development project focused on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2016\/04\/extensive-army-ant-collection-to-go-on-parade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carl and Marian Rettenmeyer Army Ant Guest Collection<\/a>\u00a0and funded by the National Science Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outstanding School Educator \u2014\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Deidra Fogarty\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>05 (ED), \u201906 MA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An educator for more than 12 years, Deidra Fogarty currently serves as a special educator for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kipp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Knowledge Is Power Program<\/a>\u2019s Spring Academy in Washington, D.C., where she has increased student reading capacities, established individualized education program goals, and worked to ensure compliance with special education reporting deadlines. She is the founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackgirlsteach.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black Girls Teach<\/a>, a collaborative platform she created to empower black women educators. In addition, she co-founded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wambookbundle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WAM! Book Bundle<\/a>, a monthly subscription service for diverse children\u2019s books.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outstanding School Administrator \u2014\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Maureen F. Ruby\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>77 (CLAS),\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>78 MS (ENG),\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>82 DMD,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>07 Ph.D.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maureen Ruby is assistant superintendent of Brookfield (Conn.) Public Schools, where she oversees school and district improvement plans, along with curriculum, instruction, assessment, and human resources. In her education career, she has been instrumental in securing and managing more than $8 million in grants including a five-year federal School Improvement Grant (SIG) for Brookfield High School, and also served as project director and co-principal investigator for a $3.9 million U.S. Department of Education literacy grant. Ruby has held previous administrator positions for school districts in Connecticut as well as faculty positions at UConn and other universities. Prior to her education career, Ruby was a dentist serving as an officer in the U.S. Public Health Service and in private practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outstanding School Superintendent \u2014\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Craig A. Cooke\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>01 6th\u00a0Year, \u201907 Ph.D., \u201908 ELP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the past five years, Craig Cooke has served as superintendent of Windsor (Conn.) Public Schools, where he is responsible for managing the school district, including overseeing a $69 million budget. Prior to that role, he served as the assistant superintendent of human resources for the district of more than 650 educators and support staff. Cooke also previously served as the human resources director for Enfield (Conn.) Public Schools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outstanding Professional \u2014\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Rachel R. McAnallen\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>10 Ph.D.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Known as \u201cMs. Math\u201d to children across the country, Rachel McAnallen has devoted her life to sharing the joy of mathematics with learners of all ages.\u00a0 A professional educator for more than 60 years, she travels the globe teaching her love of mathematics at every grade level. In addition to her experience in the classroom, McAnallen has served as a department chair, a school board member, and a high school administrator. A lifelong learner,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/2011\/06\/08\/class-of-2011-rachel-mcanallen\/\">McAnallen received her Ph.D. from the Neag School at age 75<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outstanding Higher Education Professional \u2014\u00a0<\/strong><strong>D. She is the current co-principal investigator of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Feducation.uconn.edu%2F2017%2F08%2F30%2Fprofessors-mccoach-brown-on-team-awarded-3m-nsf-grant%2F&amp;data=02%7C01%7Cshawn.kornegay%40uconn.edu%7Ce03efd3b8c5a4898b46908d67b5a2277%7C17f1a87e2a254eaab9df9d439034b080%7C0%7C0%7C636832024391766575&amp;sdata=tghPRMXzlOBo3bjlMe%2FkYMUXj69bSguPHnkYUNZhVl8%3D&amp;reserved=0\">$3 million National Science Foundation grant<\/a>\u00a0on the science of learning and the National Center for Research on Gifted Education, funded by a $5 million grant through the Institute for Education Sciences. McCoach is an established scholar, having authored or co-authored nearly 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, dozens of book chapters, and four books.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Distinguished Alumna Award \u2014 Carla S. Klein\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>72 (ED)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A retired schoolteacher, Carla Klein has dedicated herself to supporting numerous educational endeavors through scholarships and service over the years, including as an emeritus UConn Foundation Board member. She and\u00a0her late husband,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2011\/06\/a-teacher-a-banker-and-an-enduring-gift\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John<\/a>,\u00a0former president and CEO of People\u2019s United Bank, had been active in raising awareness and funding for various education causes, including support for school programs across the state focused on anti-bullying. A member of the\u00a0Bridgeport Public Education Fund\u00a0board of directors, she also was previously co-chair of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/operationrespect.org\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Operation Respect Connecticut<\/a>\u00a0and spent a year serving on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ct.gov\/governorRell\/cwp\/view.asp?A=3872&amp;Q=456624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connecticut Commission on Educational Achievement<\/a>, making recommendations \u2014\u00a0many of which were ultimately adopted by Gov. Dannel Malloy \u2014\u00a0on issues related to closing the achievement gap.\u00a0Most recently, the Klein Family Foundation \u2014\u00a0run by Klein, along with her children\u00a0\u2014\u00a0has instituted the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/2018\/09\/25\/aspiring-music-ed-teacher-finds-crucial-support-in-longtime-donor\/\">Klein Family Scholarship Fund<\/a>\u00a0at the Neag School, which provides financial support to several teacher education students with demonstrated financial need and academic achievement.<\/p>\n<h3>The 21st Annual Neag School Alumni Awards Celebration begins at 5 p.m. on March 16, 2019.
