{"id":201029,"date":"2023-07-19T07:30:24","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T11:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=201029"},"modified":"2023-07-19T08:31:20","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T12:31:20","slug":"uconn-researcher-gets-a-bite-of-upcoming-documentary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2023\/07\/uconn-researcher-gets-a-bite-of-upcoming-documentary\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Researcher Gets a Bite of Upcoming Documentary"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Milton Levin &#8217;04 (CAHNR) spends part of every year wrangling grey seal pups to study infectious diseases in their population.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, the public will get a glimpse of the work Levin, an associate research professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cahnr.uconn.edu\">College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources<\/a>, does through footage he contributed to an upcoming HBO documentary.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter the Bite,\u201d directed by Ivy Meeropol, focuses on the interactions between people, sharks, and seals in the waters around Cape Cod, Massachusetts.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_201033\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-201033\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-201033 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/After-the-Bite_4-198x300.png\" alt=\"After the Bite promo poster\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/After-the-Bite_4-198x300.png 198w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/After-the-Bite_4-677x1024.png 677w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/After-the-Bite_4-768x1162.png 768w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/After-the-Bite_4-278x420.png 278w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/After-the-Bite_4-440x665.png 440w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/After-the-Bite_4.png 1000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 198px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 198\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-201033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">After the Bite premiers on HBO Max July 26, 2023.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meeropol, who is from Massachusetts, wanted to create a film focusing on the Cape\u2019s shifting ecosystem as great white sharks \u2013 and human encounters with them \u2013 have become more common in recent years.<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis: 66.66%\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-6c531013 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Levin, who is an associate research professor in the Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science, and his collaborators have been working with grey seals in the waters around Muskeget Island and Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, for over a decade.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seals can contract diseases that also affect humans like influenza and COVID-19. And scientists want to better understand how infectious diseases impact these animals and how they spread.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re trying to understand how these pathogens circulate through the ecosystem,\u201d Levin says.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Levin\u2019s group evaluates if there is a connection between exposure to contaminants, like PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances), and immune functions in grey seal pups.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<!-- \/wp:post-content --><\/div>\r\n<!-- \/wp:group -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Meeropol interviewed Levin\u2019s colleague, Wendy Puryear, a researcher at Tufts University, about the group\u2019s research for the documentary.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>When Meeropol and her team were unable to obtain permits to film the researchers at work, she asked Levin if he could provide footage for the film.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Levin routinely collects <a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.uconn.edu\/2021\/10\/14\/a-picture-is-worth-a-thousand-lectures\/\">photos and videos to document his team\u2019s work<\/a>.
