{"id":201449,"date":"2017-12-01T13:17:34","date_gmt":"2017-12-01T18:17:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=201449"},"modified":"2023-07-18T13:26:17","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T17:26:17","slug":"scott-brown-provides-training-in-colombia-as-fulbright-specialist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2017\/12\/scott-brown-provides-training-in-colombia-as-fulbright-specialist\/","title":{"rendered":"Scott Brown Provides Training in Colombia as Fulbright Specialist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since 2001, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fulbrightspecialist.worldlearning.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fulbright Specialist Program<\/a>\u00a0has been pairing a selection of top U.S. faculty experts and other professionals from a variety of disciplines with foreign host institutions for anywhere between two and six weeks to serve as consultants \u2014 sharing their knowledge and skills, and taking part in activities that support the host institution\u2019s priorities and goals\u00a0\u2014\u00a0while being immersed in other cultures.<\/p>\n<p>Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Educational Psychology\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/person\/scott-brown\/\">Scott Brown<\/a>, who is certified as a Fulbright Specialist, accepted an assignment that sent him this past month to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.javeriana.edu.co\/home#.WiA_i62-LUI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pontificia Universidad Javeriana<\/a>\u00a0(Pontifical Xavierian University) in Cali, Colombia \u2014\u00a0one of the oldest universities in Colombia, founded in 1623.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of his two-week appointment, Brown taught two cohorts of Universidad Javeriana master\u2019s degree students the principles of problem-based learning as part of a newly developed graduate degree program in psychology offered there. One of Brown\u2019s former Neag School educational psychology doctoral students, Tatiana Rojas Ospina \u201914 Ph.D., developed and directs the new program. Herself a 2010 Fulbright Scholar, Ospina now serves as a professor of psychology at Universidad Javeriana.<\/p>\n<p>Brown also delivered an address on problem-based learning to the Universidad Javeriana\u2019s president, dean of social science, and about 50 professors, in addition to taking part in a panel discussion on teaching and learning with six of the university\u2019s faculty members.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20395\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20395\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20395 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1621\/2017\/12\/IMG_0463cropped-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"Scott Brown with educators in Colombia\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/267;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20395\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">As part of his Fulbright assignment in Colombia, Brown taught two cohorts of Universidad Javeriana master\u2019s degree students the principles of problem-based learning. (Photo courtesy of Scott Brown)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt has been a great experience, and it will certainly enhance my teaching, appreciation for diversity, and a new culture,\u201d Brown says. \u201cIt has also enhanced some opportunities for research on GlobalEd 2 here in Colombia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/globaled2.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GlobalEd 2<\/a>\u00a0is a computerized, problem-based social studies game that gives middle-school students an opportunity to learn about geography, government, human rights, the environment, and other real-world issues by assigning classrooms to work remotely with other classrooms via online simulations, email, and web-based channels on negotiating international agreements on solutions to water resources, food security, climate change, and other socio-scientific topics. Brown is co-principal investigator on several GlobalEd 2 projects.
