{"id":201452,"date":"2017-11-21T13:26:37","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T18:26:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=201452"},"modified":"2023-07-18T13:42:26","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T17:42:26","slug":"neag-school-receives-300k-award-to-support-mentor-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2017\/11\/neag-school-receives-300k-award-to-support-mentor-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Neag School Receives $300K Award to Support Mentor Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Through a generous $300,000 award from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jkcf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Kent Cooke Foundation<\/a>, high school seniors enrolled in the foundation\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jkcf.org\/scholarship-programs\/young-scholars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Young Scholars Program<\/a>\u00a0will be able to pursue areas of interest and advanced learning during a three-week residential program housed on the University of Connecticut\u2019s Storrs campus in the summer of 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Modeled after the Neag School of Education\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/2014\/09\/22\/for-talented-high-schoolers-summer-fun-includes-an-academic-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mentor Connection<\/a>\u00a0program \u2014 which was developed at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gifted.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Renzulli Center for Creativity, Gifted Education, and Talent Development<\/a>\u00a0and hosted at UConn for 20 years \u2014 the Young Scholars Senior Summit (YSSS) program at UConn will be built on research evidence demonstrating the importance of mentors in high-end talent development. Some of the students will be first-generation college students. The Cooke Foundation aims to prepare young scholars to get into and thrive at the nation\u2019s best colleges and go on to fulfilling professional lives through which they make noteworthy contributions to the world in whatever they choose to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe selected UConn out of a pool of more than a dozen strong proposals because of the Neag School\u2019s long history of research and successful programming for high-achieving students, particularly those with financial need,\u201d says Natalie Rodriguez Jansorn, director of scholarship programs at the Cooke Foundation.\u00a0 \u201cDr. Renzulli\u2019s leadership of the longstanding UConn Mentor Connection program, pairing students with faculty mentors, convinced us that our students would benefit from the unique opportunity to engage in research with renowned UConn faculty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The YSSS program will offer learning opportunities in areas not typically covered during the academic year. Instead of focusing on a classroom setting, the YSSS program will involve rising high school seniors from diverse backgrounds in current, relevant research activities in authentic situations in laboratories and other collegiate settings on the UConn Storrs campus under the guidance of University mentors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe it\u2019s essential for students to have opportunities to demonstrate their talents in high levels of creative productivity. Our work is based on the beliefs that above average ability, creativity, and task commitment can be developed and nurtured, and creative productivity comes from these interactions,\u201d says Renzulli. \u201cAll social contexts, including the school, home, and the community can influence creative productivity.
