Stemming from the\u00a0Thomas J. Dodd Research Center<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0human rights education initiative<\/a>, a new partnership has been established between University of Connecticut\u2019s Neag School of Education,\u00a0the\u00a0Upstander Project<\/a>,\u00a0and the\u00a0Mashantucket Pequot Museum<\/a>. The partnership is called the\u00a0Upstander Academy<\/a>, which formally came together last year as a way to practice outreach and human rights education with the community.<\/p>\n

The Academy, slated to run from July 31 to Aug. 4, 2017, will explore such content as the Rwandan genocide and the experiences of the indigenous peoples of New England; feature a speaker from the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, as well as a speaker from Rwanda; and offer various workshops on\u00a0creating ways to talk about genocide and reconciliation in the classroom. Teacher\u2019s guides, documentary films, and other materials on human rights and genocide education will be\u00a0distributed.<\/p>\n

The Academy is a professional development opportunity for preservice educators in the Neag School as well as in-service K-12 educators, who can take workshops in genocide and human rights education in order to foster understanding of complex historical and current issues. Its goal is to provide educators with new instructional\u00a0methods and approaches to teaching genocides and the importance of \u201cupstanders,\u201d defined as \u201ca person who stands up, speaks out, and\/or takes action in defense of those who are targeted for harm or injustice\u201d by the Upstander Project\u2019s website.<\/p>\n

Glenn Mitoma<\/a>, director of the Dodd Center as well as assistant professor of human rights and curriculum and instruction in the Neag School, has been conducting outreach with the Upstander Project and the Pequot Museum over the past year in order to come up with ways to collaborate.<\/p>\n

\u201cMuch of their mission overlaps with our mission,\u201d Mitoma says. \u201cIt was an important relationship to cultivate.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, the Academy\u2019s principal partner, is a nonprofit educational institution that focuses on the history and cultures of Native American tribes in the Northeast. The museum has been working with the Upstander Project by screening its films and helping to continue the human rights discussion. With the inclusion of the Neag School in the partnership, Mitoma says he is \u201clooking at this as an opportunity to build upon the successes of last year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within the Dodd Center\u2019s human rights initiative, Mitoma is in charge of workshops for educators geared toward policy and advocacy, which fits squarely with the partnership, he says. The curriculum is taught using the 2011 United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Rights\u00a0and focuses on helping educators translate these events into topics that are happening within the classroom today, Mitoma says. The Academy begins and ends at UConn\u2019s Storrs campus, with workshops held at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum in the middle of the week.<\/p>\n
