{"id":201746,"date":"2017-04-13T11:29:32","date_gmt":"2017-04-13T15:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=201746"},"modified":"2023-07-25T11:32:54","modified_gmt":"2023-07-25T15:32:54","slug":"students-donors-celebrate-at-annual-scholarship-awards-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2017\/04\/students-donors-celebrate-at-annual-scholarship-awards-ceremony\/","title":{"rendered":"Students, Donors Celebrate at Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Neag School of Education honored more than 100\u00a0of its students last night at its Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Formerly known as the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/2016\/04\/21\/annual-honors-celebration-connects-student-scholarship-recipients-with-donors\/\">Honors Day Celebration<\/a>, the event \u2014\u00a0held at the Jorgensen Center for Performing Arts on the UConn Storrs campus \u2014 brought together current students receiving Neag School-affiliated scholarships in the coming academic year; their guests; and the donors whose contributions to the Neag School make these sources of financial support possible.<\/p>\n<p>Support for scholarships comes from numerous sources, including Neag School benefactors Ray and Carole Neag; Neag School and UConn alumni; current University faculty and administrators; and families of former Neag School staff and alumni, among others.<\/p>\n<p>During the reception preceding the formal ceremony, student recipients had an opportunity to connect personally with the donors responsible for providing their scholarship support.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?vanity=uconnneag&amp;set=a.10154445214051765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">View photos from the Scholarship Awards Ceremony<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Student scholarships were awarded in the following departments or categories:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/2017\/04\/13\/students-donors-celebrate-at-annual-scholarship-awards-ceremony\/#teacher\">Teacher Education<\/a>; the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/2017\/04\/13\/students-donors-celebrate-at-annual-scholarship-awards-ceremony\/#edci\">Department of Curriculum and Instruction<\/a>; the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/2017\/04\/13\/students-donors-celebrate-at-annual-scholarship-awards-ceremony\/#edlr\">Department of Educational Leadership<\/a>; the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/2017\/04\/13\/students-donors-celebrate-at-annual-scholarship-awards-ceremony\/#epsy\">Department of Educational Psychology<\/a>; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/2017\/04\/13\/students-donors-celebrate-at-annual-scholarship-awards-ceremony\/#schoolwide\">School-wide Scholarships<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the student awards, Erin McGurk, director of educational services for Ellington (Conn.) Public Schools, received the UCEA Educational Leadership\u00a0Award.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"teacher\"><\/a>Congratulations to this year\u2019s award recipients:<\/h2>\n<h3>UCEA EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD<\/h3>\n<p>The University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) is a\u00a0membership association of higher education institutions that promotes\u00a0excellence in continuing higher education. This award is in recognition of\u00a0practicing school administrators who have made significant contributions to\u00a0the improvement of administrator preparation.<\/p>\n<p>Erin McGurk,\u00a0Director of Educational Services, Ellington Public Schools<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>TEACHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Friends &amp; Colleagues of Francis X. Archambault Jr. Fellowship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Established by friends and colleagues to honor Dr. Francis X. Archambault,\u00a0professor emeritus. This scholarship provides support to a Ph.D. candidate\u00a0in the field of measurement, evaluation and assessment, who demonstrates\u00a0academic excellence.<\/p>\n<p>David Alexandro<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Newton<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arminio\/Effron Scholarship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Established by Carmen Effron in memory of her father, Kenneth Arminio. This\u00a0scholarship is awarded to students with a demonstrated interest in teaching\u00a0as a profession and with a proven track record of academic excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Anne Denerville<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Leslie Jr.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fuller Scholarship for Social Justice in Education<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This scholarship was established by Ms. Katie G. Fuller to provide scholarship\u00a0support for University students enrolled in the Neag School of Education\u2019s\u00a0Integrated Bachelor\u2019s\/Master\u2019s Program, with priority consideration to\u00a0students who are also enrolled in the University\u2019s Stamps Leadership\u00a0Scholars Program.<\/p>\n<p>Julia Eldridge<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Herbert and Sarah M. Gibor Charitable Foundation Scholarship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This scholarship provides financial support for students enrolled in the\u00a0University\u2019s Neag School of Education and the College of Liberal Arts\u00a0and Sciences. Singer to provide\u00a0scholarship support for University students enrolled in the Neag School\u00a0of Education, with priority consideration to those students who are also\u00a0enrolled in the University\u2019s Honors Program.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"edci\"><\/a>Mindy Fan<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>DEPARTMENT OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION SCHOLARSHIPS<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Andrews International Education Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fund was established by Dr. Frank Andrews Stone in honor of his mother,\u00a0Ruth, and her five siblings, originally of Pasadena, Calif., whose careers\u00a0demonstrated concern for international awareness and understanding.<\/p>\n<p>Francisco Ahumada<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy Martin<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Blick Science Education Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In recognition and encouragement of innovative and\/or collaborative efforts\u00a0in science education, this award is given to a Neag School student, faculty\u00a0member, alumnus\/alumna of the School, or a member of the faculty of\u00a0another School or College of the University.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Catherine Koehler<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Betty Bussman Education Fund<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This scholarship was established through the generosity of Mrs. Betty\u00a0Bussman and is awarded to undergraduate or graduate students who are\u00a0planning careers in elementary education. The award is based on financial\u00a0need, academic excellence, and a demonstrated interest in and concern for\u00a0the needs of children.<\/p>\n<p>Abigail Nagy<\/p>\n<p>Emily Sebesky<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas &amp; Francine DeFranco Scholarship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This scholarship was established by Thomas, professor and former Dean\u00a0of the Neag School, and his wife Francine, Associate University Librarian,\u00a0to provide support to an academically outstanding incoming or continuing\u00a0student enrolled full time in the IB\/M program, with priority consideration\u00a0given to a math education major.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda MacDonald<\/p>\n<p>Marinela Maxhari<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Degnan Family Scholarship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This scholarship was established by James and Elizabeth Degnan to\u00a0provide support to an academically outstanding incoming or continuing\u00a0undergraduate student enrolled full time in the IB\/M program, with priority\u00a0consideration given to a resident of the State of Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p>Kimberly Duhart<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shannon Leigh Closter Driscoll Memorial Scholarship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This scholarship was established in memory of Shannon Leigh Closter\u00a0Driscoll, an alumna of the Neag School of Education, by her family and\u00a0friends. This scholarship is based on financial need, academic achievement,\u00a0and a demonstrated interest in gifted and talented education.<\/p>\n<p>Bryan Kirby<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Zaffetti<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eva Eaton Scholarship in Elementary Education<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This scholarship, established in honor of Eva Eaton by her family, is based on\u00a0financial need, academic achievement, and is given to students pursuing a\u00a0major in elementary education.<\/p>\n<p>Cheyenne Clark<\/p>\n<p>Briana DiCicco<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marjory C. It is designated for students in elementary and\u00a0secondary science education. Among the criteria considered are past\u00a0academic achievement and demonstration of potential for future academic\u00a0and professional accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>Emma Chassagnoux<\/p>\n<p>Alexander DeBrizzi<\/p>\n<p>Amy Hetherington-Coy<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neag Math and Science Scholarship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Established by Dr. Philip E. Moreland in memory of his\u00a0first wife, Jessie Carew Moreland.
